The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie featuring Margot Robbie as the beloved doll is here. The Barbie movie will release in theaters on July 21, 2023.
The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as her love interest, Ken, alongside an ensemble of supporting cast including Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Ariana Greenblatt, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Gerwig collaborated with Noah Baumbach to write the script for the film, which is supposed to be a fresh, satirical and funny take on our beloved Barbie doll. The film was first announced back in 2009, but due to various technical reasons, the film had to go through several re-castings.
Margot Robbie was finally cast as the titular character in 2019. Ryan Gosling and the rest of the cast were announced in early 2022, and they began filming in March 2022. The official teaser trailer for the much-anticipated fantasy comedy has now arrived, and it’s quite pink and plastic!
Check out the trailer below –
The teaser trailer begins at “the beginning of time” with shots of a large desert covered with sand dunes. A voiceover talks about the existence of dolls since the “first little girl” ever existed. However, the dolls were always “baby dolls”.
The trailer includes clips of young girls playing with dolls in the middle of a desert, but none of the dolls look like a typical Barbie doll. They’re all dolls made in the likeness of a baby. The trailer beautifully builds up to the grand entry of the iconic Barbie doll, illustrating how her introduction to the world of toys was revolutionary.
The trailer then introduces Margot Robbie as Barbie, who’s much larger in size and stands tall, fitting into all the conventional standards of beauty, as is expected from any Barbie doll in the market. Margot’s look as Barbie is reminiscent of every Barbie doll available in the market, as well as how she’s been portrayed over the years in several animated films and shows.
After the introduction of Barbie, the trailer cuts to a shot of the young girls breaking their baby dolls as they now want to play with Barbie dolls. The trailer also includes shots of a typical Barbie world. The last few shots of the trailer remind us of the iconic song lyrics – “I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world, life’s plastic, it’s fantastic.” There’s a shot of Ryan Gosling as Ken, and Margot Robbie dancing in too much pink.
All in all, the trailer gives us a short glimpse into the live-action world of Barbie. Not much is known about the film’s plot yet, but it will be a satirical take on the popular Mattel doll. Robbie has previously gone on record and said that the film will offer much more than expected and she hopes it will start a meaningful conversation.
As of now, the actual plot of the Barbie movie is wrapped in mystery. The official synopsis suggests that the film follows a Barbie doll who goes on an adventure in the real world after being banished from Barbieland for not being ‘perfect’ enough.
Will Ferrell, who plays the CEO of Mattel in the film, called the film “an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society”. In other words, the film is likely to deal with ideas of patriarchy, misogyny and gender roles.
It can also explore other issues such as body positivity and dressing norms, as the introduction of the Barbie doll has long been associated with perpetuating established stereotypes about how women should dress, look and conduct themselves.
A Barbie doll has always been seen as the perfect example of a woman, with a perfect figure, beautiful, blonde, long hair and a perfect fashion sense. The company behind the production of Barbie dolls, Mattel, has been criticized for perpetuating toxic ideas of gender roles and patriarchy, especially since it was run mostly by men.
Hopefully, we will know more about the film as we move closer to its theatrical release date.
