Hulu’s New Inclusive Brand to Be Helmed by Tara Duncan

Disney General Entertainment will be launching the Onyx Collective as part of an effort to advocate for inclusive storytelling.

The curated collection will include projects exclusively by people of color and underrepresented circles that will be introduced as a content brand on the streaming service.

According to Variety, Freeform president Tara Duncan who joined the network last year will be leading Onyx while continuing her duties at Disney’s subsidiary young adult cable.

All titles from the new collection will be released on Hulu, although according to the company, the Onyx creators will have access to all platforms of Disney.

“We’re building a home where creators of color are inspired, empowered, and have unparalleled access to reach audiences around the world. Musician Questlove’s feature documentary film Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which was recently acquired by the network and Searchlight Pictures, will be the first official project released under the brand. It will make its debut on Hulu on July 2 and internationally through Star’s Disney Plus at a later date.

Oprah Winfrey produced The 1619 Project, based on a The New York Times Magazine essay by Nikole Hannah-Jones will also be launched under Onyx at a later date.

The collective will be home to projects from creators such as writer-comedian Natasha Rothwell, who recently signed a multi-year deal with Disney’s ABC Signature.

Furthermore, any non-Marvel projects produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler under his banner Proximity will also be chaperoned by Duncan for Onyx, as per the company. Chairman of entertainment at Walt Disney TV, Dana Walden, has said:

Our industry is immeasurably enriched by the incredible talents of emerging and established creators of color. Launching Onyx Collective allows us to be the best partners to those creators, providing them with the support they need to do their best work. Tara Duncan is a gifted executive with fantastic instincts. With her leading this talented team, we have the opportunity to tell transformative stories that authentically represent our audience and are essential to our success.
