Marvel Studios has several movies and TV shows in the works, stretching till 2025. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is moving forward with an X-Files series under Marvel’s banner. But following this update, TVLine unearthed that Fox has canceled Chris Carter’s animated series based on the show.
Fox has not commented on TVLine’s report, but assuming Carter disclosed Coogler’s upcoming series, the original creator must have left hope of carrying on with the animated series at Fox. The X-Files: Albuquerque at Fox was going to be produced by Carter (who wasn’t going to serve as a writer or showrunner), but that’s shut down now.
The animated series was a comedy spinoff of the original series, but it wouldn’t have starred Mulder and Scully. Following the revival season’s end, Dana Scully’s actor revealed that the eleventh season’s iteration was her character’s swan song, and she won’t be returning. Fox Mulder’s actor, on the other hand, had shown an interest in starring as the character again.
The animated comedy was supposed to focus on a group of misfit agents who took on cases that even the paranormal investigator duo couldn’t deem possible. But here’s why that plot wouldn’t have worked in Fox’s favor.
Mulder and Scully were already labeled as the FBI outcasts since they were the only ones who were bold (read naive) enough to take on the case others deemed straight-up wacky. It doesn’t sound right to take their role as the outsiders and then bring in a group of agents who’d take a case they wouldn’t want to touch.
The whole point of the X-Files team was that they would take any case which sounded bogus to others, so for the Albuquerque series to disregard that and bring in a new group of misfits…well, it comes as a relief that the comedy spinoff was scrapped.
Ryan Coogler or Chris Carter haven’t shared any details for Marvel’s revival of The X-Files, but we at Cine Dope will keep you updated – so stay tuned!
