The first look at Billy Porter’s role in the upcoming Cinderella movie has been released.
The Pose actor is set to play the Fairy Godmother but with a twist. Directed by Kay Cannon, the Amazon Prime Original will aim to modernize the classic tale. It is set to premiere in September 2021.
Now Entertainment Weekly has revealed a new image that shows Porter as Fab G, a genderless take on Cinderella’s fairy godparent. As per the actor’s sartorial standards, the costume is over the top and extravagant.
It looks like an outfit Porter would be seen flaunting on the red carpet, which is possibly the intent, considering the character is based on his real-life persona.
Cannon had him brought in for the movie as she wrote the role specifically for the actor, who is known for his gender-bending, flamboyant fashion and personality.
Hollywood has seen many adaptations of Disney’s Cinderella over the years, with celebrities like Brandy, Hillary Duff, and Lily James, among many others playing the princess.
With Camila Cabello set to portray the beloved character next, it’ll be interesting to see the singer in her first acting role.
However, the upcoming version will be much different from its previous contenders since it will be set in the present timeline and rely on current pop music. This will also be the first time a man plays the Fairy Godmother since the role typically went to a woman.
With such new and unique elements, the movie can count on them as advantageous benefits, which will help set it apart from the other Cinderella stories.
Although initially the film was planned to have a theatrical release, it was recently changed to Prime-exclusive streaming, thus being available only to people who have access to the service.
A smart move by Amazon, the film could be a precious addition to its growing list of original content in an effort to gain more Prime subscribers.
Furthermore, if Cinderella is a success, it could secure sequels in the future, much to the advantage of the company.
