The day is saved in the end, with Madison single-handedly saving PADRE from Troy’s 5000-strong zombie gang. Madison’s deeds compel Tracy to forgive her and also lead her to Alicia Clark. Alicia and Madison share a special mother-daughter reunion moment. The finale ends with the remaining survivors going their own ways.

The finale gives us a lot to discuss and talk about. We also need many questions answered, such as what happens to the groups after the ending, how Madison survived the explosion, and why Madison and Alicia want their friends to believe they are dead.

In this article, we’ll talk about everything that happened in the finale and what it means for the series.

1. What happens to PADRE and the other groups?

In the Fear The Walking Dead finale, PADRE is destroyed. But Madison manages to save its inhabitants, so the name of the settlement is changed to MADRE in honor of Madison.

However, there are a few differences between PADRE and MADRE. PADRE was a fixed settlement, while MADRE is a network of various small settlements located all over the country. These groups have a sense of unity because of their shared purpose of helping people.

The collective goal of MADRE is to spread Madison and Alicia’s message of kindness and helping others. Although the teams head their own ways, they remain in contact via radios, as explained by Luciana. Therefore, the teams remain together even after the finale.

Meanwhile, the settlement MRAP is shifted back to Texas in John Dorie’s cabin. Odessa wishes to learn medicine from June, who has become like a mother figure to the youngster during their time in PADRE.

Dwight and Sherry stay back with the remaining PADRE children, hoping to find their parents. They take their refuge in The Sanctuary.

David and Luciana remain together as Alicia reunites them with Skidmark, the cat. Before leaving, Daniel accepts Strand as a changed man and speaks to him in German – Anton’s language.

2. Which characters know that Madison and Alicia are alive?

Only Tracy Otto and Victor Strand know for certain that Madison and Alicia are alive. They purposely appear in front of the rearview mirror of Strand’s truck, confirming that they’re both alive.

Other than that, none of the other characters can be certain that Alicia and Madison are alive. Russell announces on the radio that Alicia may have survived Troy’s attack, but they could never imagine Madison made it out alive after that zombie attack. They also believe Tracy is missing after escaping from Strand.

3. Why do Madison and Alicia want to remain dead to their friends?

Alicia and Madison believe that the legacy of helping others that they have left behind would motivate their friends to do more charitable work in the future. They want their friends to believe they are dead so they can continue the good work in their honor.

Previously, Alicia saw a group of survivors she had helped earlier joining hands to help strangers in memory of Alicia’s help. They were honoring the memory of the one who had helped them in need. After seeing the survivors, Alicia decides that it is best for them to believe she’s gone so they can continue the good work in her memory.

The same can be said about Madison, as her old group renames themselves MADRE and works together to help others. Their apparent deaths change a lot of things for the people, so they decide to keep it that way.

4. How does Madison survive the zombie attack?

The official explanation by the series is that Madison saved herself with the help of her oxygen tank, which saved her life by stopping her from inhaling the smoke and suffocating herself.

Madison also took shelter in her old underground cells, which shielded her from the strength of the blast. Madison was experienced enough to know what could happen and how she could save herself, which helped her stay alive.

It is ridiculous how Madison walks out alive from Troy’s zombie attack but Fear The Waking Dead has a history of characters walking out of disasters alive.

Madison previously lived through the stadium fire in season 4, Charlie made it out alive after facing radiation poisoning in season 8, and Daniel survived a major fire in season 2.

5. Why did Madison change her mind in the finale?

Madison changes her mind as she is influenced by Tracy Otto. When Tracy shoots Madison but then escapes, Madison realizes that she should not teach the next generation to be brutal and ruthless but empathetic and kind.

Madison is completely ruthless at the beginning of the finale and even kills Troy Otto even after his surrender. However, she goes through a change of mind as the finale progresses.

Although being brutal may help you survive, it is not the right path in the long run, given the rising zombie apocalypse. Madison reconsiders her beliefs and realizes she needs more than survival skills to live.

Madison and Alicia both share the same beliefs at the end of the finale, so the series ends on a hopeful note.
