There’s A Creature Lurking In The Woods In New Antlers Teaser

An exclusive clip for the upcoming horror film, Antlers is out, and it brings an ancient monster lurking in the dark to light.

The gruesome teaser gives the viewer a glimpse of what to expect from the film helmed by director Scott Cooper and the legendary Guillermo del Toro.

The clip released by IGN, is less than a minute long and looks like a scene taken directly from the film. Perhaps a first introduction to the creature we get?

The scene starts with a young boy, Lucas, being followed by a bully who is harassing him as they’re passing through the woods. As Lucas turns around to walk away from the bully, we hear a deep, low growl with leaves and branches rustling close by.

Both the boys look up, stunned, and stop dead in their tracks. Lucas backs up in time, but the creature lurking on top of the tree jumps down to devour the other boy as we hear shrill screams in the back. The clip ends with Lucas looking at what’s happening while standing behind a fence.

The Searchlight Pictures film is based on the short story The Quiet Boy by Nick Antosca. The creature/monster is based on the wendigo, a spirit found in Algonquian folklore.

During last year’s Comic-Con@Home panel, del Toro, who produces the film, talked a bit about his vision for the creature,

The wendigo has very, very specific cues you need to follow. The antlers, for example, are a must. I said, ‘We have to remember we’re not creating a monster, we’re creating a god.’ So the design needs to have elements that are completely unnatural, that are almost surreal or abstract.

Cooper consulted Native American and First Nations experts to be able to tell a better story,

… For Native Americans, First Nations, it’s not folklore for them. It’s not a myth. They truly, truly believe in it because it represents greed and colonialism when we first came to the shores of what is now America, and pillaged all of their resources and forced them [into] cannibalism. That taste of human flesh, which out of that rose the wendigo.
