Evil Dead Rise Director Explains the Introduction of Third Book of the Dead

If you loved Evil Dead Rise to death, not literally, of course, then you’ll be glad to know it is only the fifth film in an ongoing franchise, and you have more material to consume in the Deadite lore.

But while the canonical picture of the Evil Dead franchise is a mess of standalone horrors, Lee Cronin adds a new detail, trying to connect the solo pieces of the puzzle. The 2023 film introduced a third volume of the Naturom Demonto, called the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. And while this new development was exciting, it confused a few viewers.

In a new interview with CinemaBlend, Cronin explained that Army of Darkness had mentioned three volumes. While other films have showcased or mentioned the first two, the third was misplaced in jumbled continuity, and he introduced it in his movie. Read his complete statement about why he introduced a new volume of the Book of the Dead below:

Necronomicon Ex-Mortis

I think what I wanted to do was kind of slightly define the lore at that moment. And it was something I’d said to Sam Raimi early on in the process. I’d said, ‘Look, there are three books established in Army of Darkness, and you’ve had one book in that world, and Fede has had one book, and I want to take the other book and kind of own it.’

But that way, it opens up multiple avenues for where Evil Dead can kind of go. It also gave me the creative freedom to justifiably bring that book into a new place because nobody, since Ash was back in ye olde times in Army of Darkness, nobody knows where that third book has been. And I’ve uncovered where, or at least I’ve showcased where it’s ended up in the here and now.

Introducing Necronomicon Ex-Mortis in Evil Dead Rise gives the film a more tangible connection to the franchise and even opens up a new path for potential sequels. Now that all three volumes of the Naturom Demonto have been revealed, a new film could bring them together in one case.

Cronin has already divulged a few ideas for a possible sequel, and this new detail is a good sign to further the franchise with multiple volumes.
