Haikyu!! To the Top season 2 was a much-anticipated anime of fall 2020. Episode 1 hyped up fans for the main action only for episode 2 to bring disappointment.
Episode 2 has various issues, but the main problems are definitely the animation and the cramped plot.
Haikyu!! To the Top episode 2, is mainly animated by studio Production I.G.; it is responsible for the animation production of the whole anime series and it has done an incredible job so far.
Naturally, when the animation quality of episode 2 dipped beyond imagination, it led to a commotion among fans. The deterioration in quality is so visible that even fans who have no eye for the intricate details of animation can spot the defects.
The fluid scenes in the episode were a wreck. The normally smooth flowing movement of the characters was hindered. The characters didn’t look like themselves. These are the faults that can be easily pointed out.
The reason behind this blunder is that episode 2 was outsourced to studio 4tune. Studio 4tune has previously animated episodes 8 and 11 of Haikyu!! To The Top season 1.
Anime episodes are outsourced mainly when the budget of an anime is tight or it needs to be completed in a lesser amount of time.
More than one studios work on a project at the same time to cover more ground. The downside to this is different styles of animation as new animators aren’t used to the character designs.
Another painstakingly visible flaw is that too many chapters from the manga were adapted into a single episode.
We are guessing that episode 2 was selected as the scapegoat to stuff in some plot points which were not considered too important.
We are hoping that the rest of the episodes will go back to their normal animation quality and pace. As fans, we absolutely don’t want to lose any of the characters’ cuteness to the animation.
