There is no stopping The Handmaid’s Tale! After three successful seasons, Hulu has picked up the show for a fifth season, even before season four has premiered. The dystopian drama was scheduled to return earlier this year but the pandemic put a stop to the production of the fourth season. Fortunately, filming resumed a few months back and the fourth season will be releasing in 2021.
The show is based on Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s award-winning sci-fi book series of the same name. The tv series itself was nominated for several awards- the first season was nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards, of which it won eight. It also won two Golden Globes, including one Best Actress Award for Elizabeth Moss.
The Handmaid’s Tale is set after the fictional Second American Civil War when a totalitarian government called Gilead usurps the United States government to establish a society based on theological fanaticism.
Due to sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution, fertility rates have dropped alarmingly in the dystopian world. The women who are still fertile are assigned to the houses of the male leaders, where they are subjected to ritualized rape and are tasked with bearing children for the commanders. These women are called Handmaids.
The show follows Junes Osbourne, earlier called Offred, who is assigned to Commander Fred Waterford’s house. In the fourth season, June becomes the leader of a fierce rebellion against Gilead. She will take dangerous challenges that will put her most loved and cherished relationships at stake.
The Handmaid’s Tale stars Elizabeth Moss in the lead role, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O.T Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel, Max Minghella, Bradley Whitford and Sam Jaeger.
In other news, Hulu is rumored to be developing a spinoff series called The Testaments by the same author. But there is no knowing when the series will officially see the light of day or even if such a day will come.
The first three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Hulu.
