Dungeons & Dragons Ending: The Real Treasure Was Friendship All Along

As the name already suggests, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a fantasy film based on the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, and is set in the Forgotten Realms.

This movie redeems the original film trilogy, released between 2000 and 2012, by fixing everything that initially went wrong. You can tell that the creators have actually played DnD because of how authentic they’ve made this 2023 version.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Dungeons & Dragons (2023) revolves around Edgin Darvis, a bard on a mission to rescue his daughter from a former ally, rogue Forge Fitzwilliam, and retrieve a resurrection tablet so that he can bring his deceased wife back to life.

Along the way, Edgin forms a band of thieves to help him, comprising barbarian Holga, also a surrogate mother to Edgin’ daughter, sorcerer Simon, druid Doric, and paladin Xenk.

In order to complete their mission, the group goes on a quest to find the Helmet of Disjunction, after which they are forced to battle Sofina, the menacing Red Wizard.

At the end of Dungeons & Dragons, Edgin, Holga, Simon, and Doric defeat Sofina, the Red Wizard, and prevent her from creating her army of undead wizards. Edgin reunites with his daughter, Kira; however, Holga gets fatally injured due to the fight.

Edgin then decides to use the resurrection tablet for Holga and bring her back to life because he realises how important Holga has become to him and his daughter over the years.

1. How does the Group defeat Sofina?

After the group figures out Sofina’s plan to put a spell on everyone watching the High Sun Games, they get everyone to leave the stadium by spreading Forge’s stolen riches all over the city.

Due to this, Sofina’s spell fails to take effect and in her anger, she attacks the band of thieves.

Edgin, Holga, Simon, Doric, and Kira work together as a team to take Sofina down. While Simon uses his magical powers to nullifiy Sofina’s time-stop spell, Kira uses the invisibility pendant that Edgin and Holga gave her to put an anti-magic bracelet on Sofina’s wrist.

Doric then changes into her owlbear form and she uses her strength to beat up Sofina. Finally, Sofina gets caught under some falling debris which crushes her to death.

The group may have defeated Sofina in the final battle but we shouldn’t forget that the even more powerful Red Wizard Szass Tam is still alive. He was the one watching over all of Sofina’s actions throughout the movie.

Szass Tam being alive sets up the possibility of him becoming the villain in a sequel, if it were to happen.

2. Why does Edgin resurrect Holga instead of his Wife?

Edgin spends the entire movie looking for the Tablet of Reawakening so that he can resurrect his wife, Zia, who he lost when his daughter, Kira, was very young.

Edgin feels guilty about his wife’s death because it was a mistake that he made on a mission that made her a target for one of his enemies. He believes that bringing Zia back could be a good for Kira to get to know her mother and it could also repair his relationship with Kira.

Edgin frequently sees a small blue dragonfly during the quest. This dragonfly is symbolic of Zia and every time Edgin sees it, he is comforted by her presence.

At the end of the battle with Sofina, the group sees that Holga is fatally wounded. It is at this moment that Zia’s dragonfly reappears; but this time, Edgin is reminded of all the memories of him and Holga raising Kira together.

In one of Edgin’s flashbacks, we see Zia telling him that some things need to be let go of. So Edgin decides to let go of his past with Zia and focus on cherishing the things he has in his life right now.

Edgin realises the true family he has found with Holga and Kira and all the sacrifices Holga has made for them. And although Kira will always love her mother, it was Holga who had been there for her almost all her life.

Edgin finally uses the resurrection tablet to save Holga’s life instead.

3. Do Doric and Simon become a Couple?

Prior to their quest, Simon and Doric had already been on a date, but Doric rejected him because of how insecure and self-doubting he was.

But over the course of their journey, Simon learns to overcome his fears and get out of his head which helps him master his magical powers and show everyone what he’s really capable of.

Simon’s new-found self-esteem convinces Doric to give him another chance, thus hinting at them becoming a couple in the future.

4. What is Forge’s Fate?

Forge didn’t just encourage a Red Wizard’s attempt to enslave the people of Neverwinter, but he also imprisoned the real Lord of Neverwinter to take his place and he stole the wealth that the rich people contributed towards betting on the High Sun Games.

Before Forge can make an escape with all the riches, Edgin and his gang are able to stop him.

Once all of Forge’s crimes are revealed, he gets sent to the same prison that Edgin and Holga were locked in, at the beginning of the movie. He even tries to get out, but he fails.

After everything he did, it looks like he’ll be stuck there for a long time.

5. What is the Meaning behind the Movie’s Title?

The message that Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves conveys in the end is that “friendship was the real treasure all along”. It sounds clichéd but what makes the movie stand out is the way in which it was executed.

The writers take us on an interesting journey with each character and show us how they change for the better by the time they’ve completed their mission. In the end, all they needed was a little teamwork.

The “Honor Among Thieves” part of the title means to have honor in one’s misdeeds, which is exactly what all the thieves learn by the end of the movie.

While Sofina and Forge are punished for their deeds, Edgin, Holga, Simon, and Doric are the ones who come out on top because of the selflessness and comradery they’ve gained over the course of their adventure.

Proof of this is when they decide to return Forge’s stolen riches back to the people and instead put their own lives in danger to save everyone from Sofina’s spell. They transform themselves from cunning thieves to true heroes.
