Shonen Jump Confirms that ‘Dragon Ball Super’ Manga Enters an Indefinite Hiatus

Summary

  • ‘Dragon Ball Super’ manga will go on hiatus starting April 2024.
  • The “Super Hero” arc, was the last released chapter.
  • Although it is uncertain, the series might return in the future.

The passing away of Toriyama has left an indelible impact on not just the Dragon Ball franchise but also the entire anime fandom. Despite this, we held onto the hope that the Dragon Ball Super manga would continue. However, a recent update has been revealed that is quite disappointing to hear.

The May issue of Shueisha’s V Jump magazine announced that Dragon Ball Super manga will go on hiatus starting April 2024. The magazine did not reveal when the manga will resume serialization.

The Dragon Ball Super manga took a break in August 2022 to prepare for the upcoming arc and resumed serialization in December 2022. The “Super Hero” arc, is the last released chapter which is an adaptation of the ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ movie, released in March 2023.

When the last chapter of the manga, written by Akira Toriyama, was released, fans were thrilled to see a “to be continued” tag on the final page. Moreover, MANGA Plus added a regularly scheduled date for the next chapter, just like all its ongoing series.

Dragon Ball Super was expected to return in May, giving the series and writer Toyotarou an extra month to process Toriyama’s passing and plan the next saga. However, now it appears to be on indefinite hiatus now, and there is no indication of when it will return.

Nonetheless, this doesn’t imply that the series will not continue. It could simply be that Toyotarou needs more time to process the passing of his idol and master or that the entire Dragon Ball team requires more time to decide which direction to take the franchise in.

This news comes as a shock to fans, especially after their hopes were raised, but they shouldn’t despair. Dragon Ball Super can still continue, but fans may have to wait a little longer for its return.

About Dragon Ball Super

Dragon Ball Super came into serialization in June 2015, edited and illustrated by Akira Toriyama and his protege Toyotaru, respectively.

Dragon Ball Super takes the DB universe to another level by introducing the long asleep God of Destruction, Beerus.

Beerus initially decided to decimate Earth but postpones his plans when discovering the fantastic food he had never eaten. He also hopes to fight Super Saiyajin God one day.
