Downton Abbey 2 Release Date Moves From Christmas 2021 To March 2022

Fans have to wait a little but longer for the upcoming Downton Abbey sequel. Downton Abbey 2, which was originally set to release in theatres on December 22, 2021, is now being pushed to March 18, 2022.

As reported by Deadline, Focus Features is pushing the North American release of Downton Abbey 2 to March 2022, with Universal Pictures International releasing internationally on the same date.

The Downtown Abbey official Twitter account had previously announced in April that the sequel was slated for a release around Christmas time.

Plot details remain unknown, however the synopsis reads: Lord and Lady Grantham request the pleasure of moviegoers’ company at their Yorkshire country estate this Christmas.

The first Downton Abbey film came out almost 4 years after the series ended and continued the storyline from the series, with much of the original cast returning. The film, set in 1927, depicts a visit by the King and Queen to the Crawley family’s English country house in the Yorkshire countryside. As the Royal staff descend on Downton, an assassin has also arrived and attempts to kill the monarch.

Downton Abbey became Focus Features’ best domestic opening ever at the box office when it was released in September 2019, earning $31M. The film earned $237.9M worldwide.

The December date would’ve had the film clash against The Matrix 4, Sing 2 and The King’s Man.  Whereas now, Downton Abbey 2 will now compete against Lionsgate’s The Unbreakable Boy. With its following weekend marking the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

About Downton Abbey 2

Downton Abbey 2 is the upcoming sequel to the 2019 film Downton Abbey. The first Downton Abbey film came out almost 4 years after the series ended and continued the storyline from the series, with much of the original cast returning.

Along with the original cast, some new additions including Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West in undisclosed roles. The screenplay is written by Julian Fellowes, with Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge producing with Fellowes. Simon Curtis replaced the first film’s director Michael Engler for the sequel.

The films are the continuing story of the Crawley family, wealthy owners of a large estate in the English countryside in the early twentieth century. Although, plot details remain unknown, the synopsis reads, ‘Lord and Lady Grantham request the pleasure of moviegoers’ company at their Yorkshire country estate this Christmas.’
