Severance Episode 7 ended with a massive reveal that made us all rethink what really is happening at Lumon. In an intoxicated state, Mark shows Alexa his wife’s picture and tears it to prove that he’s moved on from his late wife, Gemma.
However, after Alexa leaves, he sticks the torn pieces with tape, and at that moment, it is revealed that the person in the picture is Ms. Casey from Lumon. She is the wellness counselor who works part-time and has been seen a few times in the show.
This made me think about who exactly was Ms. Casey. Was she a clone of Mark’s late wife, or did Lumon somehow resuscitate Gemma? What exactly is Lumon doing, and if it is somehow performing experiments on dead people?
It isn’t revealed, but Lumon could either be cloning people or using advanced biotech to resuscitate dead people and install Kier’s conscience in them.
Throughout the show, there have been many hints at a possible cloning experiment going on in the company. The first hint was the opening sequence, where there’s a crowd of black gooey creatures along with one man who seems to be the original person.
The second hint is the quotes of Kier Eagan and James Eagan in the Perpetuity Wing. ‘The remembered man does not decay.’ and ‘History lives in us whether we learn from it or not.’
These two quotes indicate that Lumon might be trying to keep Kier Eagan’s conscience alive by installing it in other people who work in the company.
The third hint is Petey’s map that he had hidden in the office behind a photo frame. On the map, there’s one corner that he labels as ‘Some people might live here.’ While the first guess could’ve been that these people could be permanently severed employees, the most recent reveal could mean that these people are actually clones.
The fourth hint is the room full of goats. When Mark and Helly are trying to escape from Ms. Casey’s watch, they somehow stumble upon this room with a man and a bunch of goats. All those goats could be experimental clones.
Finally, the fifth hint was Ms. Casey’s picture in Mark’s hand. Mark refers to the woman as her wife, and the clone theory seems more probable. So, either Ms. Casey is Gemma’s clone, or she is Gemma herself, but with Kier Eagan’s conscience.
If we also observe Ms. Casey’s mannerisms, she’s the only employee we’ve seen who is quite robotic while talking. Harmony also mentioned in an episode that she is merely a part-time employee.
Ms. Cobel also tried to experiment with Casey/Gemma by asking her to keep a watch on Mark and Helly. She explained to Milchick how she wanted to study the wellness counselor’s behavior and reactions when subject to an unpredictable environment.
While this theory is primarily speculative, there is a chance that we might get some answers, if not all, by the end of Season 1. We know that there’s an Eagan family gala that will take place, and the event might flip the complete theory. Episode 8 airs tomorrow, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
