Kratos is Prophesised to Die in God of War: Ragnarok — But Does He?

God of War (2018) was full of plot twists and shocks- firstly, we see the mural of Kratos’ death in Jotunheim. At the same time, it is revealed that Atreus is the Norse trickster god, Loki, and finally, in the post-credit scene, we see the Jotun butcher, Thor, arriving at the doors of Kratos and Atreus.

All of this seems connected to each other, but the fans couldn’t stomach the fact that Kratos is supposed to die in God of War: Ragnarok, so does he really?

Kratos does not die at the end of God of War: Ragnarok even though he was prophesized to die in the game. The game follows a theme of changing fates and leading the armies of nine realms instead of Tyr possibly changed his future too.

“Death can have me, when it earns me.”

Kratos, The God of War

Phew! what a relief, right? But is it even possible to kill the mighty spartan, the god killer? Well, to be honest, he technically does sometimes die in the game.

Who killed Kratos in God of War: Ragnarok?

Kratos VS Thor in God of War Ragnarok

Thor, the Norse thunder god, kills Kratos during their first battle at the beginning of God of War: Ragnarok if the players fail the Quick Time Events.

Interestingly, during the battle with Thor, initially, if Kratos does die at the hands of Thor, the game over screen will flash, but Thor himself will revive Kratos using the electric charge of the Mjolnir.

Even though this event is not strictly canonical to the story, as Kratos dies from various enemies if his health bar reaches 0, it is still one of the exciting features that deserve a special mention.

Can Kratos die permanently in God of War?

Kratos can die permanently in God of War despite being a god, as we have already seen many Norse and Greek gods die in the game.

Luckily, not even the supreme gods could take down the mighty spartan throughout the Greek and Norse sage of the series, and now it seems that the only one to bring him death will be his old age itself.

Kratos is currently around 200 years old and has grown significantly since the early Greek saga games. Seeing this sudden extreme change in his appearance makes me believe that despite being a god, Kratos sure can die of old age soon enough.
