Doctor Who Upcoming Special Will See the Return of a Classic Villain

After the threat of the Daleks troubled the Doctor in Doctor Who’s New Year’s Day special, the series is bringing back a different classic villain—the Sea Devils.

The teaser trailer for the second special came after the New Year’s special finished airing, and it is fittingly titled Legend of the Sea Devils.

The clip didn’t reveal much. However, Craige Els, who appeared in Doctor Who: Flux as the alien Karvanista, has been credited as Marsissus, hinting at a new role for the actor expected to play the main Sea Devil that we saw in the teaser.

While talking to Doctor Who Magazine, executive producer Matt Strevens teased,

“It’s a bit of a swashbuckler. It’s the last ‘regular’ adventure story before you go into the machinations of a regeneration story.”

As the Sea Devil has had many reincarnations in the show throughout its long run, the one seen in the trailer resembles a design much closer to the classic. Strevens also praised showrunner Chris Chibnall, adding,

“Chris is a superfan, as we know, so for him, it was really important that we did the Sea Devils justice. He was really keen to stick close to the classic design.”

The special will see the Doctor and team land in a small seaside village in 19th century China under threat by the pirate queen Madame Ching.

Jodie Whittaker returns as the thirteenth Doctor, along with Mandip Gill, John Bishop, Crystal Yu, Arthur Lee, and Marlowe Chan-Reeves.

As Whittaker’s journey as the Doctor reaches its conclusion soon, we don’t know who will take over from here, but she is said to receive a grand farewell.

An interesting rumor floating around is that David Tennant, Matt Smith, Christopher Eccleston, and Peter Capaldi are returning for the show’s 60th anniversary specials.

According to The Sun, a TV insider revealed,

“The BBC wanted something unique to mark six decades of Doctor Who, and while getting all the former time lords together will be a challenge, it’s one Russell might just achieve.

After all, he was the man responsible for signing up Christopher and David back in 2005, and he is one of the few people who might convince them to be a part of the show again.

It remains to be seen if he can achieve an exact copy of The Five Doctors, but he will certainly want to capture some of the spirit of that landmark episode in these specials.”

Doctor Who special, Legend of the Sea Devils, does not have a release date yet. It is set to air sometime this spring on BBC One in the UK and BBC America.
