Filmmaker Sam Raimi has consistently been warning Marvel fans that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is going to be a horror film and probably the scariest of all the MCU films.
Given the number of horror titles in the director’s filmography and even Marvel boss Kevin Feige promising a hint to Evil Dead 2, the Doctor Strange sequel will be scary. But how scary, you wonder?
Film Ratings has the official verdict—despite maintaining its PG-13 rating like other MCU titles, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will have “intense sequences of violence and action, frightening images and some language.”
Considering its rating, it’ll be much more tamer than full-blown horror fests like Evil Dead or The Conjuring franchise. Nonetheless, it’ll be interesting to see just how far Raimi has pushed the PG-13 boundaries with the scary and mind-bending concept of the Multiverse.
With shots of the Scarlet Witch covered in blood and a sighting of Strange Supreme, it’s almost a promise that the MCU is about to get much more complicated and enjoyable.
As plot details of the film remain under wraps, it’s hard even to speculate who the real villain is, and the role of the hero seems dubious as well. At this point, everyone seems to be a suspect and has an evil variant lurking around somewhere.
If the “frightening” experience is also expected to include some sort of psychological horror, then fans are in for an even more thrilling ride.
It isn’t such a bizarre thought if one takes Moon Knight into consideration, as the overall theme of the MCU seems to be getting darker altogether.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will shake up the MCU with its theatrical release on May 6.
