Doom Patrol: Do Cliff and Jane get together?

Doom Patrol is all about a bunch of misfits with superpowers who are just trying to make it through the day without bringing the end of the world. One of the overarching themes is how the different characters come together and become a found family, helping each other through difficult times.

One pairing that stands out to the audience is that of Cliff and Jane. Their initial love-hate relationship blossoms into something wholly endearing once they start helping each other. Many fans now wonder—do Cliff and Jane end up together?

Well, Cliff and Jane don’t date in HBO Max’s Doom Patrol. This is because they share more of a father-daughter relationship.

The show does tend to pair some characters up and put emphasis on their relationship. But just like Larry and Rita, who have developed a special albeit platonic bond, Cliff and Jane’s relationship too is strictly non-romantic.

Cliff used to suffer from the guilt of abandoning his daughter, while Jane endured the trauma brought on by her vile father. In the first two seasons, they begin to help each overcome this pain.

Jane helps Cliff reunite with his daughter and make peace with how things are. On the other hand, Cliff helps Jane with the monumental task of managing the other personalities and beating Daddy once and for all.

Throughout these storylines, it’s clear that Cliff sees Jane as a daughter, perhaps even as making up for the time he didn’t get to spend with his own daughter. While Jane wouldn’t admit it, she sees Cliff as a father figure, just like Niles.

Even the general audience consensus is that the two have more of a father-daughter relationship.

DC comic fans may be surprised by the show’s decision—after all, Cliff and Jane did date in the comics. In fact, they’re even around the same age, aided by the fact that Jane doesn’t physically grow old while Cliff is literally in a tin suit.

But, like many comic book couples, their relationship doesn’t last very long. So, it is perhaps for the best that the show doesn’t explore a romantic relationship between the two and instead chooses to depict a fresh interpretation of their dynamics.
