Disturbing Viral Pokemon Video is More True than Fictitious

Warning: Not for the weak at heart, and definitely don’t read or watch this while eating (like I did).

While the Pokemon franchise is known for its cute yet powerful creatures who are taken care of by their trainers, a recent video has brought to light something about the anime that is obvious but not talked about.

It is not an official video, yet the portrayal of the Pokemons is too close to reality. Check out what I’m talking about right here:

In the video, you can see a graphic portrayal of various dishes being made from the three starter pack Pokemons: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. The Pokemons are being sliced and diced in front of our eyes at a butcher shop-like setting.

Now, this video might be fan-made but not far from reality. Although normal animals exist in the franchise’s universe, many canon scenes also hint at Pokemon consumption.

In episode 46 of the original Pokemon anime, Ash’s Pokedex quotes that Farfetch’d makes a delicious meal. Ash himself says that it tastes good. In episode 16, both Ash and Brock salivate over several Magikarp dishes.

Even Team Rocket thinks of eating Togepi in episode 47. Slowpoke’s tail is a rare item sold at the black market as it is cooked in stews.

The anime rarely shows normal animals and is just mentioned to compare the Pokemons. Yet, there are ample examples of meat consumption in the anime, so where is all this meat coming from?

Pokemons are just like normal animals in the anime’s universe. We have pets but also animals that we consume, and so is the case with the anime.

The issue of disgust and morality arises because the anime only ever focuses on the relationship of the creatures with their trainers and never shows how they are treated outside of the tournament arrangements.

Of course, since the video uses the most well-known Pokemons from the series, the blow lands too close for comfort. Ash has gotten stuck in dire situations with these Pokemons many times, and the fact that he could’ve consumed them for survival brings shivers down my spine.

Thus the video becomes disturbing to anyone who wasn’t prepared to accept the truth behind the cute and intelligent Pokemons. This is not the only dark nuance in the series, but the sudden emergence of this viral video really made me take a skeptical look at the superb anime from my childhood.
