Dirty Dancing Star Jennifer Grey Teases Details for Sequel

Jennifer Grey, who played Baby Houseman in the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing, has revealed some plot details for the film’s upcoming sequel. Grey will be reprising her role as Houseman in the film, set to release in February 2024.

Everyone knows the famous Dirty Dancing, but let us give you the highlights. The film is set in 1963 and follows Baby Houseman on vacation, where she meets Patrick Swayze’s Johnny Castle, the resort’s dance instructor, who teaches her how to dance. And thus begins their epic romance.

The film was immediately a huge hit at the box office and with critics, earning a profit of over $200 million, even scoring a place in the top 20 of the highest-grossing films that year. The movie’s tracklist and choreography had bagged awards and the hearts of its viewers, and the film remains a classic watch to this day.

The film’s popularity had even birthed a prequel in 2004 titled Dirty Dancing Havana Night and was also adapted as a stage musical (Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage) the same year.

The upcoming sequel was announced by Lionsgate, who owns the rights to the original, at ComicCon 2022, along with Jennifer Grey’s return to the project. Jonathan Levine, who last directed Seth Rogen’s Long Shot in 2019, is coming back to direct the much-awaited sequel.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Jennifer Grey talked about the upcoming sequel and disclosed select details of the 2024 film.

I have no desire to remake the first one or to compete with the first one or to make it better than the first one or as good. It’s more about: What’s a fresh story to be told?

She stated her disinterest in remaking the first one and added that the film follows Baby’s story in the ’90s, 30 years after the events of the original. Grey mentions that her interest lies in following her character from “a completely different lens” and letting the focus be on another couple.

I’m excited by the challenge of looking at it from the point of view of what happens when it’s 30 years later and it’s the ’90s. What happens with the person that had that experience—what happened to her and what is now relevant about the original story at a different moment, looking at it through a different lens.

While her answer doesn’t let any big details slip through, we now know that Baby won’t be playing a centric role, but the nostalgia and feel of the film will be the same, albeit with fresh talent and a three-decade time leap.

Presumably, Jennifer Grey’s Baby may play a mentor figure to the troubled teen who will lead the cast. No other cast members have been added to the ensemble, but now that the director’s chair has been filled, audiences can expect new information and updates to come to light soon.

About Dirty Dancing 2

Dirty Dancing 2 is an upcoming romantic drama directed by Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine. The movie is a sequel to the famous classic Dirty Dancing (1987).

The plot is yet unknown, but we know that Baby’s story will intertwine with a new couple at the center, which will involve romance, drama, and of course, dance.

The director has promised the return of as many cast members as possible, but only Jennifer Grey’s return is confirmed for the sequel. The film will be distributed by Lionsgate Studio, with a tentative release date in February 2024.
