Julius Avery Offers Update on Van Helsing Film After 3 years of Silence

It’s been three years since we heard anything about Julius Avery’s Van Helsing reboot, but the horror director has finally shared some news about the project.

Avery, who directed the 2018 zombie war movie Overlord and the 2023 exorcism thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, is working with fellow Aussie James Wan, the mastermind behind The Conjuring and Saw franchises.

Avery is writing and directing the film, while Wan is producing it.

In an interview with Fangoria, Avery shares some exciting news about his Van Helsing movie. He says that he is still working on the script for the film, which will feature the legendary vampire hunter. He also confirms that Wan is on board as a producer. Read what he had to say:

I mentioned James Wan before, and I’m a huge fan of his. I’ve been wanting to work with him for a while. He’s a fellow Aussie, and yeah, we’re teamed up on a Van Helsing movie together, which I’m currently writing and intend to direct myself with James producing. But yeah, that’s still in motion. I can’t tell you much more than that, but I’m very, very excited about it!

We don’t know much about Avery’s Van Helsing movie yet. A few years ago, Universal wanted to make a film with the vampire hunter as part of their Dark Universe, and they hired Dan Mazeau to do it.

But then they scrapped the whole Dark Universe idea in 2019, and Mazeau’s Van Helsing went with it.

Avery loves making scary movies with supernatural elements, so he’s a great choice to write a new Van Helsing movie.

A new movie about the vampire hunter could also mean that Dracula shows up, and we get to see them fight again. That would make them clear enemies and show how brave Van Helsing is for taking on the most famous vampire from Transylvania.

But maybe Avery’s movie won’t have Dracula in it, since that might shift the focus away from Van Helsing.

It might be a new story about Van Helsing hunting other vampires or monsters. That could be a cool way to show a different side of the character and still respect his history as Dracula’s enemy.

We don’t know when Avery’s Van Helsing movie will come out, but he’s still working on it, so we can hope to see it soon (Fingers crossed)!
