In a conversation with Variety, director Destin Daniel Cretton explained the post-credits scenes featuring two famous Avengers, the official start of MCU’s Phase Four movies and Shang Chi finally entering “the circus”.

Having an Asian superhero, much less an Avenger, is a significant step Marvel has taken towards representation. However, it is only until the post-credits scenes arrive that fans truly get a glimpse of Shang Chi entering the Avengers club and the MCU.

In a mid-credit scene, we see a sneak-peek of the worlds colliding as Shang Chi (Simu Liu) and Katy (Awkwafina) run into Wong, played by Benedict Wong from Doctor Strange with Abomination from The Incredible Hulk from 2008. This gives way to a teaser of Abomination appearing in the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk.

As for the post-credits scenes, fans have none other than Bruce Banner and Captain Marvel joining them to help figure out the mysterious origins of the powerful Ten Rings.

Through his teleportation ring, Wong brings Shang Chi and Katy to his sanctum, and fans are blessed with Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larsson on a holographic FaceTime. Their entry is confusing for the leads but not for the fans!

However, it wasn’t easy to decide which Avenger would join them. Director Cretton revealed to Variety that post-credits scenes go through “so many tweaks and updates depending on what’s being developed in other shows and movies in the MCU.”

Cretton revealed his personal preference for one of the Avengers to be Brie Larson’s, Captain Marvel. But it did pose some difficulty as at that particular time in the MCU, Captain Marvel was working on a different part of the galaxy. Well, it looks like video calls saved the Marvel universe too.

Here’s what Cretton had to say:

We talked about it being Brie, but we did not know that it could make plausible sense that Brie could be there. I mean, it obviously helps that we ended up landing on hologram versions of these characters so they can just step away and get back into whatever crazy stuff they’re dealing with.

The other scene that opens up the door of Shang Chi’s entry into the core of MCU is his sister Xialing creating a female-centric organisation, giving the Ten Rings an upgrade. Her boiling resentment towards her father is apparent as she goes: “The Ten Rings will return”.

When asked about the impression the scene leaves, that of “consolidation of power across the planets”, Cretton just states,

I think that’s a fair assessment if that’s what you think. You know, the purpose of these snippets, they are to create questions.

In another confusing scene, fans were greeted with Bruce Banner rather than Hulk. When asked to shell out more details regarding why he looks human instead of Avengers: Endgame, he went the old Marvel tactic way, not revealing anything.

He even kept mum on whether he knew the origin of the Ten Rings. He first shared that he does, only to later add, “I know as much as anybody.”

Now that Shang Chi is finally into the MCU, it’ll be pretty exciting to see how his timeline fits into the mega-franchise’s constantly changing storyline.
