Street Racing is Back in the Fast & Furious Franchise with Fast X

Louis Leterrier has shared that the upcoming movie Fast X will reintroduce an iconic element of the Fast & Furious franchise.

The series, which debuted in 2001, has focused mainly on Dom Toretto (played by Vin Diesel) and his escapades in the world of street racing and crime. Fast X is set to release on May 19th and will be the penultimate installment of the franchise.

The film will follow Dom Toretto as he tries to safeguard his loved ones from Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa).

Fast X boasts a star-studded cast, including Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster, John Cena, Charlize Theron, and Brie Larson.

Despite the evolution of the Fast & Furious series away from racing, director Leterrier has disclosed that the next movie will have street racing as its core element.

In an interview with Total Film (as reported by CBR), Leterrier expressed his fondness for the franchise and his desire to reintroduce this element. Check out Leterrier’s statements below.

As a fan, there’s some stuff that I really wanted back from the franchise – the street races [were one]. That’s the fun of it all: when you’re the head of a movie [series] that you’ve admired and have been a fan of for so many years, you get to bring your fantasies to life!

As soon as the Fast & Furious series kicked off, it revolved around the crimes committed by Dom and his gang and Brian O’Conner’s covert probes.

The first movie, The Fast & the Furious, introduced Underground racing which has remained an integral part of the franchise ever since.

However, Fast Five marked a significant shift in the movies, emphasizing more on Dom’s family and featuring more intense physical action and stunt sequences.

When F9 hit theaters, the Fast & Furious franchise had already ventured into plotlines involving espionage, apocalyptic threats, and the importance of family.

The latest installment saw Dom and his crew confront Jakob, Otto, and Cipher, who had reappeared from The Fate of the Furious.

F9 packed a lot of excitement, with adrenaline-fueled pursuits and a showdown between two brothers. The film’s highlight was Tej and Roman’s epic journey into space.

As the franchise nears its end with one more installment, director Leterrier’s decision to reintroduce street racing will likely thrill long-time Fast & Furious fans.

It remains to be seen how prominent the race scenes will be in Fast X and how the makers incorporate other fantastical elements into the storyline.

Regardless, it will be an epic watch once it releases on May 19, 2023.
