Digimon Artist Shares Omegamon’s Unpublished Designs

From a game to manga to anime to toys, and even watches, Digimon series was a big hit in the late ’90s and is still one of the best anime for kids in 2020. Digimon or Digital Monsters is a type of anime that we all loved watching while being a kid.

One thing you probably didn’t know about Omegamon, the Warrior Digimon, who was also one of the “Royal Knights,” is that its current design was not the first one the artist had in mind.

Omegamon underwent many renditions. The artist, Kejin Watanabe, had to work closely with Mamoru Hosoda, Bokura no War Game director and Mamuro didn’t like the initial design of the character.

Both worked on different versions of this mega fusion before finally agreeing. The first one was named GaruruGreymon, while the second one was named Mastemon. From these canon-like prototypes, you can easily see the creativity of the artist and how he tried various things like a warrior suit and even an ancient-looking Greymon.

Digimon: The Movie was also a thriller which offered explosive Digimon adventures back in 2000 through three different stories involving Kari Kamiya and her friends. Even though the movie was a compilation film with footage from its own older movies, it still had a lot of original and praise-worthy creative work. Some even say it was Oscar-worthy. What do you think?

About Digimon:

Digimon, short for “Digital Monsters,” is a Japanese media franchise offering toy pets, manga, anime, games, films, and even a trading card game. The franchise was created back in 1997 as a series of virtual pets, influenced by Tamagotchi/nano Giga Pet toys. The franchise gained momentum with its first anime, Digimon Adventure, and an early video game, Digimon World, both of which were released in 1999.

Digimon, the series focuses on monsters like creatures, who inhabit a “Digital World,” a parallel universe that originated from Earth’s various communication networks. Digimon hatch from eggs called Digi-Eggs, and they go through Digivolution, which changes their appearance and increases their powers over time. The effect of Digivolution, however, is not permanent, and Digimon who have digivolved will find most of the time revert back to their previous form after a battle or if they are too weak to continue. Most of them can even speak.
