Chapter 278 of Diamond no Ace Act II, titled “Holding out for a Hero,” was the manga’s latest installment.
Asou becomes an unlikely hero as he successfully catches the ball despite hitting his head against the boundary wall of the stadium. This ends the fifth inning of the match, and only four more innings are left.
Inajitsu is currently in the lead, with the score being 2-1. The upcoming innings will be vital as each missed opportunity could cost them a run, and even one run is enough to decide the victor of the match.
Seidou starts with offense in the sixth inning, and Kuramochi is the first batter. Will he be able to hold up against the ace of Inajitsu? We’ll find out in the next chapter.
1. Chapter 279 Discussions and Predictions
The first half of the game is over, and Seidou has taken a lot of damage. Things are getting pretty heated up, but it seems like Furuya will still get to pitch in the sixth.
If Asou is substituted by Masashi, he might not be able to be as good as his senpai. This could lead to Furuya taking on as the left fielder, and then maybe Sawamura could step in as the pitcher.
It’s been a really long time since we saw Sawamura in action, and the payoff is totally going to be worth it. For now, I hope that Kuramochi doesn’t get striked out. Mei’s pitches are progressively getting better, but it’s finally time for Seidou to show their true potential.

5. Chapter 278 Recap
The story picks up after Asou catches the ball, even after slamming his head against the boundary. This brings Inajitsu to three outs, and Seidou cuts its losses in this dangerous situation at one run.
A stretcher is brought in for the left fielder, and Miyuki explains to Furuya the reason why the ball slowed down without going over the fence was that the batter failed to best him. His power was unmatched, but despite that, they could have ceded two runs if Asou hadn’t caught the ball.
Sawamura cheers Asou, claiming that his performance was awe-inspiring. Even Mei acknowledges that though they’re the ones who seized the lead, Asou’s play negated the effect entirely. The game is then put on a small break for the scheduled field maintenance, and only four innings are left.
Asou is substituted by Masashi in the left-field but replacing Asou adequately in fielding is way beyond his ability. Asou cut Inajitsu’s building momentum short, and Seidou’s batting opens with Kuramochi.
After a few words of motivation by their coaches, the two teams are ready to face each other after the maintenance.
It’s the top of the sixth and Seidou’s attack. The first batter, Kuramochi, takes his position in the batter’s box. His batting average in the current tournament is .455, proving that Seidou’s fast-legged leadoff man is in great shape.
As his teammates cheer him, a flashback hits Kuramochi, adding to his motivation. Mei takes his stance as the pitcher and throws the first ball. The pitch is a fastball that misses. The second is a high inside fastball, resulting in a foul.
It went in without the batter touching it, showing Mei’s edge. He keeps bombarding the batter with high-speed pitches as the next is a low-breaking ball.
The score count is 2-1, and Mei is a little too stiff. His eyes seem fiery, like those of a killer, and even Kuramochi senses his bloodlust from a mile away.
He thinks about how both Furuya and Sawamura have improved and hits the next ball. This is where we see a changeup. The batter is cornered, which is terrible news for Seidou.
The cheers from the audience and Seidou members continue as Kuramochi sinks in his teeth and prepares to face a do-or-die situation.
