The film, titled Hot Take: the Depp/Heard Trial, will be directed by Good Satan director Sara Lohman. Mark Hapka (Parallels) will be playing Johnny Depp in the TV movie, while Megan Davis (For Nothing) will play Amber Heard.

Other major real-life characters being portrayed in the film are Depp’s lawyer Camila Vasquez (Melissa Marty), and Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft (Marry Carrig). Late Night with Conan O’Brien writer Guy Nicolucci will write the script for the upcoming 2022 film.

Adam Lewinson, Tubi’s chief content officer, has stated that the streaming service fast-tracked the filming and production of this dramatized version of the famous trial, for audiences to revisit.

With our partners at MarVista, this Tubi Original was fast-tracked into production to capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer.

If you haven’t been on social media for the last few months and have missed the drama that ensued between the divorced couple, this TV movie is the perfect watch for you. But let us recap what went down in a short summary for you anyway.

The Depp/Heard Trial began in April 2022 when Johnny Depp sued ex-wife Amber Heard for three counts of defamation in the op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018. Heard countersued Johnny Depp for the defamatory article made by his lawyer on three separate statements.

Amber Heard was found guilty on all counts, while Depp was found for one. The 2-month trial ended in June with Heard facing the bigger loss. She not only faced a hefty legal charge but also lost multiple film projects, the biggest being her cut screen time in the upcoming Aquaman sequel.

The film will release on the streaming platform on September 30 for viewers to rewatch the sensational story.
