A tragic backstory of our Mist Hashira is revealed in episode 8 of Demon Slayer season 3, titled “The Mu in Muichiro.”

With the perfect father who went through hell and back solely to protect his family, a tragic night befalls them all, with only the two children left alive to survive by themselves. However, their relationship is far from perfect and nears abusive.

As years go by and yet another attack occurs, a realization comes upon Muichiro. It was not that his brother had hated him, but that he had loved him so much that he had to be harsh for them to survive and for Muichiro to be where he is now.

1. Episode 9 Speculation

With the return of Muichiro’s memories, he finally returned to his full strength as a hashira and recovered his favorite sword that Tetsuido, his first-ever swordsmith, designed. Now that he is no longer handicapped, mere Gyokko is nowhere near stopping him.

We should see the final slash through Gyokko’s neck pretty soon next episode, considering the massive power-up that Muichiro has just gone through. The actual dicey situation lies on Tanjiro’s end, however, but he may hopefully get some backup from Mitsuri eventually if things go downhill against the combined Upper Rank.

3. Recap of Episode 8

Muichiro escapes the water prison and realizes the poison is slowly beginning to take effect on his body, numbing him to the point where he can barely stand. However, his memories slowly start returning while he lies on the brink of death, particularly those of his father.

He was an incredibly hard-working man who did everything for the family, wandering out in the most dreadful storms just for the sake of finding medicine for his wife. However, Muichiro also had a twin, Yuichiro, who was extremely cold but was still there for him.

Lady Amane had come to visit the twins one day, informing them of their heritage of swordsmanship. However, even though Muichiro wanted to join them with her, all it did was start a massive fight between the brothers, leading to them not speaking to each other for months.

One sweltering night, when Muichiro cannot fall asleep, their house is invaded by a demon. However, Yuichiro jumps to shield his brother, and his death sends Muichiro into a highly violent rage that his memory completely blocks out as nothing but a splotch of red.

In his final words, Muichiro listens to his brother’s prayers for at least him to live on and follow his dreams. This memory brings back his energy and willpower to get up from the floor and slice through the minor demons in the area.

Walking back into the workshop, Haganezuka continues honing the blade endlessly while Gyokko’s rage builds up every second. Muichiro assumes his stance and launches another attack before being trapped by a massive tentacle attack. However, he easily slices through it with his newly forged sword, which fits like a glove.

He remembers his first swordsmith, Tetsuido, who worried about him day and night but made him the perfect sword that he can now use to use Mist Breathing, Fifth Form, to zoom through all his defenses and cut him without him even realizing he’s been attacked.

Switching between vases quickly, Muichiro understands everything his brother had done for him over the years and his final words. There is no god or Buddha in this world to save him, and it is now up to him to exert his infinite strength as one of the chosen ones and save himself.
