Dave Bautista Opens Up About His Deleted Scene with David Dastmalchian in Dune

Dave Bautista talks about a deleted scene from Dune: Part One. Bautista portrayed the character of Glossu Rabban in Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film Dune, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 book of the same name. He will reprise his role in the upcoming sequel. Dune: Part Two will hit theaters on March 1, 2024.

Rabban is a cruel and arrogant character in charge of the fictional planet Arrakis. He is unaware that Baron is using him to fulfill his larger schemes. Rabban also shares a different relationship with Gurney Halleck, who is also set to appear in the sequel.

In an interview with Collider, Bautista revealed new details regarding a deleted scene from Dune: Part One involving Rabban and the Piter De Vries, Harkonnen’s Mentat.

Villeneuve recently revealed that he will not release deleted scenes from the first film. Therefore, we will never see the deleted scene featuring Bautista and Dastmalchian. Read Bautista’s thoughts here:

It’s just, right now, I’m thinking, “God, is he [Villeneuve] gonna be mad at me if I say?” But no, it’s nothing major. It’s not giving away anything, but I had a scene in the first film with Dave Dastmalchian where I was intimidating his character, and it was very subtle, but I wanted that for selfish reasons because I love Dave so much. I guess it just didn’t fit in, or there wasn’t room or pacing issues. Those decisions are way over my head. But yeah, I was disappointed that I didn’t make the cut.

In Frank Herbert’s book, Peter is portrayed as a sadistic, manipulative, and conniving character with a strong voice in the Harkonnen court. The Baron was unhappy with Piter, who acted beyond his role as a Mentat, a human trained in logic and computing.

The Baron thought he might have to kill Piter, but things worked in his favor. Piter met his end when Duke Leto Atreides, the leader of a rival house, killed himself with a poison gas tooth and tried to murder the Baron as well.

Dastmalchian portrays the character well, although the film reduces him to a silent and obedient assistant to Baron. Piter does not kill Dr Wellington Yueh like in the book. The Baron kills him in the film.

The deleted scene Bautista talks about would further portray him as the meek and obedient Mentat, in contrast to his personality in the book. Moreover, Rabban’s scenes in the film focus on his cruel personality and effectively portray his physical strength. Therefore, it would not add to Rabban’s character in any way.

Piter is dead now, so the sequel will take Rabban’s story forward as Paul threatens the Harkonnens. We can also expect an epic rematch with Gurney Halleck.
