This show is set within the universe of the video game, Cyberpunk 2077. In the game, players play in first-person POV as mercenary V, who has to go through a dangerous mission in Night City lest he gets killed by an implant in his body.
From this tiny tidbit itself, you may be able to deduce that Night City is a place obsessed with technology-related body modifications. Edgerunners takes place in this city, too, but it will have entirely new characters and storylines.
In order to get by in life, people take on roles such as Techies, Netrunners, Solos, etc, which have to do with hacking, machinery, and combat respectively. Edgerunner is a new role invented by the series, used to describe those individuals who use their technological enhancements to work outside the law to overthrow huge corporations.
Protagonist David Martinez will find himself becoming an Edgerunner after he goes through a personal tragedy.

Along with David (voiced by Zach Aguilar and Kenichiro Ohashi) Netrunner Lucy will also be the primary protagonist of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
She’s voiced by Aoi Yûki and is known to be quiet and mysterious, but with enough expertise to kill you in a heartbeat. She’s already part of a mercenary group but will join David to form a new group of Edgerunners, as they share a common vision.
The other Edgerunners you’ll come across are Dorio, Kiwi, Maine, Pilar, and Rebecca.
