Crunchyroll is Leaving the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U Consoles on August 29

Although the time gap between generations of gaming consoles is increasing with each new generation, the older consoles always remain on the brink of becoming obsolete. Companies and technologies stop providing support for older consoles, and soon after, you can’t do much on them except play older titles.

This is what exactly has happened again, as Crunchyroll is leaving PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The app won’t be available on these consoles from August 29, so anime fans, you have 26 days from today to enjoy your daily dose of anime on these consoles.

Attention PS3 Players — On August 29, 2022, the Crunchyroll app will no longer be available on the PlayStation Store, and existing users will no longer be able to use the app.

This is kind of surprising, considering Sony just acquired Crunchyroll last year, and there were rumors that the app would be a part of PS Plus in the coming months.

On the other hand, PS3 is over 15 years old now, so it’s had a good run, and the player base might be too low for the company to put in its efforts anymore to support the older console.

Shutting down of various services on PlayStation and Nintendo’s older consoles has been a hot topic for a while now. The backlash to PlayStation’s decision to end support for the PS3’s online storefront resulted in the decision quickly being overturned.

Crunchyroll will still be available on newer PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles. So, if you were using your console for anime streaming, you might need to start looking elsewhere, or better, why not buy a new console?
