Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action Gets Surprising Update

Netflix confirmed a live-action series based on the famous ongoing manga and anime One Piece back in 2020. Developed by Matt Owens (Luke Cage) and Steven Kaeda (Lost), the show has no confirmed release date, but I hear Netflix is gunning to premier the exciting series in August 2023.

One of the live-action series stars just gave us an exciting update! Craig Fairbrass (Cliffhanger), who plays Chef Zeff in the upcoming Netflix series, complained about a long flight from South Africa in his most recent tweet, but that’s not the whopper.

South Africa was a crucial production location for One Piece, so you can probably already guess where I’m going with this article. The actor confirmed that he was returning after some reshoots for the live-action manga adaptation, suggesting the studio is currently in post-production and gearing up for its 2023 release.

Eiichiro Oda’s manga and the subsequent anime adaptation are one of the biggest sellers in the Japanese entertainment industry. We couldn’t be happier to get a live-action of the beloved MC, Luffy, following his dangerous but highly entertaining quest of becoming the Pirate King.

But, of course, all good things come with few cons. Netflix has a lot of pressure considering the hype it has generated and the expectations it has raised. And its previous manga or anime adaptations, like 2017’s Death Note and 2021’s Cowboy Bebop, haven’t done so well in the eyes of the anime fans.

And Netflix’s habit of canceling any series that doesn’t do well in its first season before giving it a chance to grab the attention of nostalgic fans might also pose a problem. The odds aren’t in favor of the One Piece live-action if previous patterns are to be trusted, but I still hope Netflix does a good job bringing the iconic manga to life.
