Criterion, a known film restoration and home video distributor, will be releasing its first set of 4k Ultra HD Blu-rays, with Citizen Kane leading the way.
The five other films in this set are Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Drive, The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night.
Purchase detailsfor the first three on the list will be out in the coming week, as per the official website. The release of the same is speculated to be for Criterion’s November 2021 round.
The remaining titles are slated in the months thereafter. A few of them will also be available in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.
Criterion is competing in visual media during an era of passionate online streaming.
Its decision of providing a chance to own refurbished, ultra HD copies of renowned films is not only welcomed but necessary; it’s what gives Criterion its edge amongst serious film connoisseurs.
If you’ve ever been to a single film studies class, you’re bound to have heard of Citizen Kane. Directed by and starring Orson Welles as Kane, it revisits crucial points of the news publication mogul’s life after he passes away, and the public speculation of his dying words, “Rosebud”.
At the time of its release in 1941, it garnered notable critical acclaim but not much box office action.
Later, it would be re-released in 1956 which would cement its status as a cult classic, and of course, a significant chapter in many a film history and technical production course.
This film, promised to be one of the greatest of all times, will be rendered now in 4K UHD along with a Blu-ray containing a special feature, courtesy of The Criterion Collection.
