Cillian Murphy Becomes Oppenheimer as Kenneth Branagh Joins Cast

Oppenheimer is ready to make an explosive creation.

Principal photography for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has officially begun and Universal just dropped the first look at Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer.

The black and white image, very fittingly, shows Murphy holding a lit cigarette between his lips as his eyes pierce the camera. This is quite an accurate first look as Oppenheimer was a known chain smoker who eventually suffered from throat cancer.

Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer:

As Murphy prepares to play the ‘father of the atomic bomb,’ there’s another new addition to the huge cast with Kenneth Branagh joining in for a mystery role.

Branagh will be joining in fresh off after portraying Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile and having bagged an Academy Award nomination for his latest, Belfast.

Nolan, Branagh and Murphy will reunite once again after 2017’s Dunkirk with an extensive cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett and Rami Malek.

Syncopy and Universal Pictures announced on Tuesday that the production will take place on multiple locations in the US including New Mexico, California, New Jersey and has a massive budget of $100 million.

These filming locations can be traced back to Oppenheimer’s work during the war time.

Oppenheimer was a theoretical physicist and professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory when he first developed nuclear weapons for World War II with the “Manhattan Project.” An inaugural test detonation was done in 1945 in the New Mexico desert.

Universal has also revealed that the film will use a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film and will be the first project ever to have shots in IMAX black and white analogue photography.

Oppenheimer is set for a theatrical release in the US on July 21, 2023.
