Friends or Foes? Batman & Catwoman Form an Alliance in New Trailer

Neither Bruce Wayne nor Riddler is the highlight of the new trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

It’s Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman who takes the spotlight. And naturally, she has a lot of cats too.

The trailer shows that despite their electric chemistry Bruce doesn’t know whether he can trust Selina. As a man who is supposed to be a loner in the film, he doesn’t know if she’s a friend or just someone unreliable who’ll turn on him.

Yet the Bat can’t stay away from the Cat as at one point he warns her not to throw her life away, to which she very coolly replies, “Don’t worry, honey. I’ve got nine of ‘em.”

Her style is the epitome of the word iconic. Even from her primitive cat-suit design to her different hair-dos, Kravitz owns the role. One of the shots shows her donning short pink hair, and for some reason, it reminded me of Natalie Portman’s fierce look in Closer.

In a recent interview with Empire, Kravitz said that she studied how cats and lions fought. Mixing martial arts and capoeira with feline, dance-like movement was how they choreographed her fight sequences, and boy does it translate well on the screen.

Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will be fighting alongside Catwoman and the trailer assures it is going to be a lot of trouble.

The trailer begins differently before its focus shifts onto Selina. An original character created for the film, Bella Reál, gets more screen time as she confronts Bruce Wayne.

You know, you really could be doing more for this city. Your family has a history of philanthropy, but as far as I can tell, you’re not doing anything.

The Gotham City mayoral candidate asks Bruce where he has been when the city clearly needs his help. Her words are woven with shots of Bruce chasing the Penguin in his batmobile – showing us that he is very much helping Gotham from the shadows.

Paul Dano’s Riddler leaves more clues for Batman – we see, what looks like, the map of Gotham drawn using chalk on the floor with the words “A REAL CHANGE” in the middle of it.

His question mark is used multiple times throughout the trailer. The Riddler’s symbol has had an upgrade and looks like a question mark drawn in the middle of an aiming point of a gun.

(A finalized version of the sign that was used in the concept art.)

But of course, the trailer would be incomplete without a riddle, and so it goes, “It can be cruel, poetic, or blind. But when it’s denied, it’s your violence you may find.”

The answer? Justice. And it’s no one else but Batman who replies.

Funnily enough, just seconds before this, The Riddler mocks a clueless Batman as he tells him of his grand plans for Gotham, “Oh, you’re really not as smart as I thought you were. Bruce… Wayne.”

Villains never go easy on the good guys but Bruce looks like he could use a much needed break. The man is dealing with his own complicated situations as he confronts Alfred about a long-standing lie – a mysterious secret that awaits him “where it all began.”

The Batman comes out in theatres on March 4, 2022, and this clip alone is enough to prove it should be at the top of your watchlist.
