Brie Larson Cooks and Teaches Science in “Lessons in Chemistry” Trailer

Brie Larson plays a TV chef who is also a scientist in the trailer for Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+.

The Oscar-winning actress has a busy 2023 with two big franchise movies coming up. She will join Vin Diesel and his crew as Tess, the daughter of Mr. Nobody, in Fast X and reprise her role as Carol Danvers in the MCU movie The Marvels.

Besides big-budget movies, she is also the star of the streaming show Lessons in Chemistry, which just dropped its first trailer. Watch it below:

Lessons in Chemistry — First Look | Apple TV+

Lessons in Chemistry is a TV drama series adapted from Bonnie Garmus’s best-selling novel, with Lee Eisenberg as the showrunner.

The show is set in the 1950s and features Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a woman who dreams of being a scientist but uses her chemistry skills differently. The official synopsis for the show goes like this:

After Elizabeth is fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show. But rather than showcase recipes, Elizabeth aims to show a nation of overlooked housewives – and the men tuning in – that the status quo can be changed as she craves to return to the lab.

The trailer for Lessons in Chemistry reveals the show’s 1950s setting with its music and style and introduces the story of Larson’s Elizabeth, who works in a lab and is praised as “one of the smartest people” there.

However, Elizabeth soon takes her skills to television, where she boldly announces, “Welcome, viewers. My name is Elizabeth Zott, and this is Supper at Six.”

Supper at Six is clearly a huge success, as enthusiastic female fans are shown clapping and cheering.

But perhaps more significant is the image of a little girl sitting on the floor of her living room, watching Elizabeth show her viewers how to cook (and also sneak in some chemistry lessons).

The trailer has a similar look and feel like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Elizabeth could be seen as the scientific counterpart to Midge Maisel.

Larson already played a historic role in Captain Marvel as the MCU’s first female superhero to headline a movie.

Lessons in Chemistry may not be as world changing as Carol Danvers’ cosmic exploits. Still, it does allow Larson to play a different kind of hero, one who doesn’t rely on superpowers to challenge the societal compass.

The show arrives on Apple TV+ this fall.
