Baldur’s Gate 3 Hotfix #17 will compress save game file sizes to save space

Summary

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 released Hotfix #17 focusing on minor bugs, glitches, and more.
  • The update also changed how players interact with Gale in Act 1, giving them more control over this interaction.
  • Hotfix #17 reduces the size of save game files which is expected to help players across all platforms.

Baldur’s Gate 3 went through a three-year long Early Access which immensely helped its developers to really understand what’s working and what’s not. Even after launch, the support has been consistent and thorough. Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest development just further proves this point.

Baldur’s Gate 3 recently released Hotfix #17 which is a minor update focusing on bugs, glitches and game crashes. The update solved the notorious save game issue which was reported by several players.

According to Microsoft, the latest update will reduce the size of save game files across all three platforms (PC, Xbox and PlayStation). This is expected to help out players since manual saves can easily stack up. Baldur’s Gate 3 will also discard stored data which the game no longer needs such as summons.

Hotfix #17 also fixes a rather annoying issue regarding Gale in Act 1. Gale or The Wizard of Waterdeep is one of the main companions in Baldur’s Gate 3. Earlier, if players failed to feed Gale when beginning a conversation, he might leave the party. Now, Gale only departs once the player has made it clear that they will never feed him magical artifacts.

1. Here are the patch notes for Hotfix #17 in Baldur’s Gate 3:

I. PERFORMANCE AND CODE

  • Fixed black and colorful visual artifacts sometimes appearing for 1 frame on PS5 when switching scenes or opening and closing UI windows.
  • Increased the compression of savegames, which should fix several issues caused by large save game files.
  • Reduced the size of save files by removing summons that don’t exist in the game anymore.
  • Guarded against crashes caused when certain character resources (Actions, Bonus Actions, Superiority Dice, etc.) were added and later removed by a mod or cheat engine.

II. GAMEPLAY AND COMBAT

  • In Honour Mode, the aura of Cazador’s now properly dissipates after he’s Sorry!
  • Fixed the camera sometimes zooming in while jumping or casting projectile spells.
  • Fixed the ability to walk through open doors when you click beyond them from far away.
  • Fixed Thieves’ Tools in the camp chest or inventory of a companion who is waiting at camp not being accessible when lockpicking.

III. UI

  • Safeguard Shield’s Saving Throw modifier is now correctly reflected on the Character Sheet.

IV. FLOW AND SCRIPTING

  • Gale will no longer permanently leave the party if you don’t offer him any magic items while talking to him – unless you’re abundantly clear that you don’t plan on ever doing so.
  • Fixed characters getting stuck ‘in a story event’, preventing you from controlling them, after getting killed in the fight with Grym.

Although Baldur’s Gate 3 is not exactly perfect, these minor updates help polish the game. However, Act 2 and Act 3 still come with a mountain of bugs and glitches. Don’t be surprised if these hotfixes never stop coming!
