Disneyland’s Avengers Campus Opens To Huge Crowds And Long Queues

A new Marvel-themed Avengers Campus opened at Disney California Adventure on Friday. The six-acre wideland was built on an area where A Bug’s Land attractions were previously located.

The Avengers Campus is Disney’s all-immerse theme park land, based around Marvel’s The Avengers franchise. It takes inspiration from the stories and characters in the Marvel comics and films. Fans can visit the Ancient Sanctum and Avengers Headquarters.

The land offers one new ride, Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure. Eateries include Pym Test Kitchen, where meatballs and hamburger buns are either tiny or oversized.

It also features Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout, which was called Twilight Zone Tower of Terror before 2017.

Park workers dressed as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Dora Milaje, and other heroes perform stunts and magic tricks at scheduled times throughout the campus.

“It’s a ton of technology,” said Brent Strong, executive creative director for Walt Disney Imagineering, while talking about the technology and special effects that are the stars of the expansion.

Here’s a tiny glimpse of what went into creating the Avengers Campus at Disneyland:

On Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure, riders use hand gestures to throw virtual webs to hit robotic spiders.

The ride uses gesture-recognition technology, 3D imaging to create the spiders and a virtual background, and a dashboard to tally each rider’s score.

Near the ride, the park sells a device called a web shooter ($24.99) and Iron Man’s “repulsor” ($24.99) to combat the spiders.

The Disneyland Resort Backlot Premiere Shop has Marvel collectibles and merchandise, including a superhero statuette priced at $685.

The new Avengers Campus had an opening ceremony on Wednesday night. The Avengers Twitter account posted photos of the some of the cast members who attended the opening ceremony.

Marvel fans showed up before dawn to be the first visitors inside Avengers Campus on opening day and faced massive crowds and stunningly long lines.

According to the Orange County Register, by 7:15 a.m., the half-mile long line switched back on itself 17 times and filled a service road and the bus depot area on the Harbor Boulevard side of the parks.

Attempts at social distancing prevailed in the first legs of the enormous line but broke down in the later legs as crowds continued to arrive. The Web Slingers boarding passes sold out almost instantly on the Disneyland app.

Many fans are eager to visit the park.

While the ones who have visited have had the full Avengers Superhero experience.

Avengers Campus was scheduled to open last July but was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. A similar Avengers Campus is being built at Disneyland Paris.
