Sigourney Weaver Reveals Kiri’s Connection with Eywa in Avatar 2

Avatar 2 will hit theaters in less than a week, and we have some new revelations about Sigourney Weaver’s new character and her connection with Grace and Eywa. The actress’ character in the original film was killed off after a fatal injury, but not before the Navi tried to revive her consciousness by transferring it into one of their own.

Avatar: The Way of Water retrieves Weaver on the cast list, but James Cameron handed her the role of Jake and Neytiri’s adopted daughter Kiri. But Weaver’s connection with her new character goes deeper since Kiri is the biological daughter of the same Navi’ woman chosen as Grace’s Avatar before her death.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Weaver explained that Kiri knows of Grace and even tries to form a connection with the deceased scientist.

There’s definitely a transfer of the curiosity and the love of nature. Grace much prefers to be in Avatar form, out in the forest, and study things, and I think Kiri has a different way of expressing all that. She is just one with nature. And where that comes from, I’m not sure. But it’s very much in the script, and luckily in the movie, you will see her try to connect more with Grace.

But that’s not all Weaver disclosed! The returning actress also teased the connection between Kiri and the Navi’ people’s deity Eywa. The holy tree may have been destroyed in the first film, but Kiri believes she can still hear Eywa’s “mighty” heartbeat, and Weaver shines a light on the connection.

There is a scene where she talks about hearing Eywa’s breathing. I wasn’t really sure what happened to Eywa when Hometree was destroyed, but clearly, she still exists in some form. Eywa is [why] Kiri can hear things other people don’t hear. I think it makes Kiri quite uncomfortable, but I think because she’s so sensitive to all of nature that she would also be sensitive to Eywa.

We have another guess for why Kiri is the only one who can hear Eywa. Grace’s consciousness transfer was incomplete, but there was a connection between her and Eywa, which momentarily reached into her Avatar. Kiri inherited that connection to Eywa, and the same link also explains her bond to the deceased scientist.

Kiri’s unique ability will be one of the most significant bits in the upcoming sequel since she will serve as the only real link between the people of Pandora and their deity. Even if that results in some degree of isolation and doubt, it will be interesting to see Kiri rise above it and understand the depth of her abilities.

Avatar: The Way of Water will release worldwide in theaters on December 16, 2022.
