Does Aunt May Die in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Spider-Man: No Way Home had much higher stakes than any Spider-Man film ever. The MCU has yet again given us one of the best superhero films of the franchise, and I still can’t stop raving about it.

The film saw some of the most dramatic moments in terms of nostalgia, drama, and even plot points, setting up the next phase of the character arc. We saw Peter fighting off supervillains in the first two Spider-Man films, but we didn’t really feel the heat.

But with this film, it was pretty different. We saw Spider-Man shedding off the innocence he always had. One of the prominent reasons for this is the answer to the question, does aunt May die in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

But before that, here’s a small disclaimer: This article contains spoilers, and if you haven’t watched the film and do not want any answers, here’s where you stop. Beyond this line, there is information you wish you had seen in the movie and not read.

Aunt May does die in Spider-Man: No Way Home. She was killed due to a fatal injury caused by the Green Goblin. She dies after delivering the iconic Spider-Man dialogue, “…with great power comes great responsibility….”

In the pre-climax scene, we see the Green Goblin and Spider-Man facing it off against each other. Needless to say, Aunt May got caught in the middle of this, and in true Green Goblin style, he knocked out Aunt May with his Glider.

Goblin then sets off the pumpkin bomb and escapes. Aunt May doesn’t die immediately but tells Peter how trying to help the Sinister Six and cure them was always the right thing. It’s what they do. After this, she delivers the iconic line and dies in his arms.

It was a gut-wrenching moment for all of us as we saw Aunt May take her last breath in the film. It also became a huge plot point in Spidey’s character arc. For the first time, it became all too real for him. Yes, he had seen Tony Stark, his mentor, die in front of him, but that didn’t seem like the end of the world.

Aunt May was his rock, and now at that moment, that rock just faded. It brought out a different side to him, as we also see in the film’s final moments. He was rageful, vengeful and his innocence faded with his aunt’s demise.

As an audience, I had been waiting for a moment when Tom Holland’s Peter came out of his bubble. Indeed he had saved half the universe, but he’s always had a safety net. Now, he has no safety net for the first time in his life, and he literally is on his own. So while I’m still recovering from the shock of seeing May die, I guess I’m excited to see a newer version of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
