Attack on Titan or Shingeki no Kyojin is the most popular manga, written by Hajime Isayama, with over 90 million copies of its compiled volumes worldwide.
The series has won numerous awards, including Best TV Animation, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Background Music, and more.
It is one of the most highly anticipated releases of this year, the other being Haikyu Season 4 Cour 2, and it has already entranced the audience with its trailer.
Fans need to prepare themselves for the upcoming final war between Marley and Eldia, but before that, let’s start with its release date!
Let’s see what’s that.
1. Release Date
The final episode of the third season in July 2019 ended with an announcement of a fourth and final season scheduled to release in Fall 2020.
The fourth season of Attack on Titan also named Attack on Titan: The Final Season will premiere on the TV screens on December 6th, 2020 and will run for a course of 12 episodes.
Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Hulu streamed the previous seasons on their platforms.
Since, the anime has to cover a lot of content of manga which is not possible to cover in just 12 episodes. Fans can assume that there will be a Season 4 part 2.
Many fans are disappointed as the fourth season will mark the end of the series, but are also excited as it is going to be quite a journey.
There were many hurdles for Season 4 to cross before its release, let’s see what happened?
2. Production Issues
I. Cause of Delay
The final season of Shingeki no Kyojin initially seemed like it was going to be delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
But new announcements revealed that the final outing for the franchise is still on track for a release this Fall.
Ever since the first trailer of Season 4 came out, the news had gone back and forth on whether the season was still up for release this year.
The official release date has yet to be set; however, the TV schedule for Japan has been updated to include the upcoming season for Fall 2020.
II. Studio and Staff Change
In May 2020, the final season was confirmed to have switched studios from Wit Studio to MAPPA. The directors, scriptwriters, and character designers were all changed as the season changed hands.
Wit Studio produced the first, second, and the split cours of the third season, the movies and specials.
There are rumors of Wit Studio rejecting the offer to animate Season 4, but now MAPPA is the studio going to create the final season.
The official website features comments from the Isayama, the previous director, Tetsuro Araki, MAPPA representative director, Manabu Ohtsuka, and Wit Studio representative, George Wada.
Isayama also drew a picture to thank Wit Studio.
Now let’s move on the plot of the final season.
3. Expected Plot
The show makers have refrained from giving any major spoilers, but fans can expect all their questions to be answered this season.
Attack on Titan Season 4 will continue where Season 3 ended.
In Season 3, Eren and his fellow soldiers didn’t fight for their survival against Titans, but a far shrewder enemy: Humans.
With the help of Armin and Mikasa, Eren will look to regain their lost glory to save the face of humanity, and the Marley arc will begin.
A man bun!?!? Are they correct or…
The official website of Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4 series revealed a Key Visual. The season produced by MAPPA will premiere on NHK General this October.
The visuals show us the final showdown between Reiner and Eren, the new Scouts, and the Ultimate Titans in all their glory.
After the new PV was released, AnimeTV asked the AOT fandom on their views regarding the animation change.
The fans look happy about the change as the new changes seem to follow the manga designs very carefully.
The new character designs are still in works and probably will be released in September by the website.
Now, let’s get down to analyze the trailer and take it apart!
5. Trailer Breakdown
The new PV reveals the show’s staff, cast, and the animation by the new studio, MAPPA.
The recent trailer confirms the challenge Season 4 faces, how can just ONE season do justice to an entire final act?
We can see that the trailer introduces new characters, Titans, settings, and the older versions of the characters from the previous seasons.
The fears of manga readers that the season might potentially skip some content to fit the season have washed away as it looks like it will include everything! Yes, with no spoilers for anime-only fans.
The video starts with the new characters’ perspective that hail from Marley. We witness Marley at war with another country with Titans fighting alongside.
Zeke and Reiner, with a new Jaw Titan, could be seen, older than before. There seems to be a clash between Survey Corps of Paradis Island against Marley leaded by Eren.
Scenes flash by and we see Eren standing in front of an illuminated tree at the end.
Season 4 will be epic and everything the manga readers would want as an excellent finish to the franchise.
Now that we have seen everything, how exactly do we watch it?
6. Where to Watch?
Attack on Titan is available to watch on Netflix, Funimation, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, and Hulu.
7. Music and Animation
I. Animation Quality
The trailer is highly praised for its stunning visuals and faithfulness to the manga.
The design looks fascinating and interesting as the story moves into a battle royale between humans and Titans.
MAPPA is known for its adapting animation styles as they remain true to the source material.
No wonder the animation looks more enticing than usual.
II. Theme Songs
No one can forget Guren no Yumiya, and this has remained consistent with all of Shingeki no Kyojin’s theme songs.
With badass OSTs and chilling openings, we can instil the fact that Titans are not that threatening in front of our Survey Corps.
This season, Hiroyuki Sawano will be joined by Kohta Yamamoto to compose the music scores. The end creation is wonderful with its psychedelic notes and visuals.
So, what other things are up in the Titan world?
8. Franchise Updates
The official site announced a compilation film titled Shingeki no Kyojin: Chronicle.
It recapped the first three seasons and was broadcasted in the Japanese theatres in July 2020, before the release of the final season’s broadcast.
It summarized all the 59 episodes in this film.
On a sad note, Haruma Miura, the actor who portrayed Eren Jaeger in the live-action movie, is no longer among us.
The 30-year old actor was found dead at his home on July 18th, 2020.
9. Fan Expectations for Upcoming Season
The final season is going to tackle the densest, meatiest, and the saddest part of the entire story.
Initially thought that the season might gloss over some facts, as it was just one season, but the trailer suggests otherwise.
There is not a single fan who wasn’t hyped up with the reveal of this trailer and the new looks of the characters are making them go crazy.
Let’s recollect what happened in the previous seasons.
I. Season 1
Centuries ago, humanity was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls.
However, that fragile calm of over a century is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.
After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication.
Eren enlists into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls.
The story follows Eren, along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert.
They join the brutal war against the titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.
II. Season 2
The story continues from Season 1 as Eren Yeager and others of the 104th Training Corps have just begun to become full members of the Survey Corps.
As they ready themselves to face the Titans once again, their preparations are interrupted by the invasion of Wall Rose—but all is not as it seems as more mysteries are unraveled.
As the Survey Corps races to save the wall, they uncover more about the invading Titans and their members’ dark secrets.
Eren isn’t the only titan shifter in the squad and gets kidnapped as a result.
III. Season 3
Season 3 follows Eren as he vows to take back everything that was once his.
After being rescued from the Colossal and Armored Titans, Eren Yaeger devotes himself to improving his Titan form.
Krista Lenz struggles to accept the loss of her friend, Captain Levi chooses Eren and his friends to form his new personal squad, and Commander Erwin Smith recovers from his injuries.
All seems well for the soldiers until the government suddenly demands custody of Eren and Krista.
The Survey Corps’ recent successes have drawn attention, and a familiar face from Levi’s past is sent to collect the wanted soldiers.
Sought after by the government, Levi and his new squad must evade their adversaries in hopes of keeping Eren and Krista safe.
Alongside him, the Survey Corps strive, through countless sacrifices, to carve a path towards victory and uncover the secrets locked away in the Yeager family’s basement.
