Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 Ep 5: Release Date, Speculation

Episode 4 of Attack on Titan, season 4, part 2, titled “Memories of the Future,” is the latest installment of the anime.

The number of layers in this episode was insane. First, we found out about the Attack Titan’s ability to see the memories of its future users.

This ability connected all the strings of the story, giving us a grim reminder of the terror that ensued in the first season. Grisha was able to communicate with the future version of Eren through his memories and even got the chance to apologize to Zeke.

Zeke teared up when he saw his father sincerely regretting his decisions, perhaps reconsidering his plan. His initial motive was to make Eren see Grisha’s past, hoping that he would realize how much of a scum their father was. Eren saw all this coming and probably pulled the best reverse Uno move on Zeke.

Now that we know Eren’s true motives, what exactly has he planned? Also, has he truly changed Zeke’s mind? We’ll find out in the next episode.

Episode 5 Speculation

Eren is really forging his way forward, and it is becoming increasingly clear that he never strayed away from his goal. This episode circles back to all the critical moments of Grisha’s life from the previous seasons.

The Attack Titan’s ability to see the memories of its future users was a twist that I never expected.

Also, it really was true that Grisha did not repeat the same mistakes he made with Zeke. It was really interesting to see how Zeke’s perspective of Grisha utterly changed, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if Zeke re-evaluated his worldview.

Most importantly, it will be very exciting to see Eren’s real plan from this point. Also, now that Zeke’s entire plan has collapsed, his next move is going to be very interesting to watch.

Zeke gains control of the Founding Titan, giving him control of every Eldian in existence. He finally has the power to carry out his euthanization plan but doesn’t want to do it without Eren by his side.

He assumes that Eren isn’t on his side because Grisha brainwashed him, and hence, he uses the power of the founding titan to take him inside Grisha’s memories.

They start with Eren’s childhood memories, where Grisha is a well-known doctor. He treats patients with elite status, hoping to find out the owner of the Founding Titan.

Zeke uses this as an example to show how little Grisha cared about his new family because if he was discovered, Eren and Carla would be in danger too.

This observation turned out wrong since it quickly became evident that Grisha learned from his past mistakes and loved his new family.

Upon his arrival on the Paradis island, he searched for the true royal family and found them within a few years. He decided to confront them but, in the end, he didn’t go through with it and returned to his family.

A new ability of the Attack Titan is revealed where the current titan owner can see into the memories of the future users. So, due to this ability, Grisha can sometimes see the future from Eren’s perspective.

When he’s in the basement, Eren directly looks at Zeke, and Grisha also begins to see him. Although he doesn’t recognize Zeke in his elder self, he can still see him from Eren’s point of view.

Seeing everything so far, Zeke realizes that his assumptions are wrong since Eren wasn’t brought up to become an Eldian restorationist. He then begins to wonder why his brother became a nationalist.

Eren explains that he was born this way. No one had to tell him anything because he valued his freedom above everything else. Rather than letting someone steal his freedom, he would steal theirs first.

Zeke continues to take Eren through all of Grisha’s memories, hoping that at least one would change his mind. We then get to a scene from the very first episode, where Grisha asks Eren why he wanted to join the Survey Corps.

Eren replied that he wanted to explore the world outside the wall, and if he didn’t carry on, all the deaths would be in vain. We now know that this made Grisha remember all the deaths of his fellow restorationists, including Dina and Kruger.

This gives him the courage to confront the Reiss family and steal the Founder Titan from them. He goes down the chapel and begs Frieda to save the Eldians from the Titans that are going to attack them soon. He emphasizes how the Eldians are ignorant and don’t even know about the sins of their ancestors.

Frieda denies and explains how no amount of Eldian deaths will equate to their ancestors’ crimes. Having no other choice, Grisha begins to turn into his Attack Titan but stops since he cannot kill children.

Zeke is surprised because this is where his father should have killed the royals since the past cannot be changed. At this moment, the current Eren directly speaks to his father by showing him his future memories.

He urges him to take the Founding Titan, and Grisha tearfully kills the family after being reminded of everyone’s sacrifice. This is also when Zeke finally finds out about the Attack Titan’s ability to see the future.

Grisha is distraught after stealing the Attack Titan and cries out to Eren, asking if this is what he wanted. He then sees Zeke and finally realizes it is his son.

This is possible because Eren is directly looking at his brother, and Grisha can see him through future memories. He apologizes to Zeke for being a bad father and tells him that everything is about to go according to Eren’s plan.

The episode ends as the two brothers are back in the paths dimension, and Zeke looks at Eren with a horrified expression.
