3. Recap of Episode 3

The people on the ground see the plane swerving through the clouds above Eren. Levi spots the Beast Titan on his spine, and they swerve the plane towards him. Mikasa, Armin, Levi, Jean, Connie, and Reiner jump out with ODM gear as they target the Beast’s nape.

Ymir watches the situation unfold while presiding over the Eldian mindscape. Armin tells everybody to use the Cart Titan to get away while he transforms and blasts the whole area to shreds. Unless Armin abandons his idealist hopes and faces reality, he won’t be able to save humanity.

He has no choice but to kill Eren right here and right now. Before he can transform, a colossal tentacle appears from behind and restrains him. Ymir refuses to let the Founder die so quickly and summons all the nine titan forms of previous generations. Armin was captured without a scratch so he couldn’t transform into the Colossal Titan.

Pieck figures out who they’re battling against and says they won’t win an all-out battle. The Cart Titan evades through the Nine Titans with incredible speed but is stabbed from behind. Reiner’s Armored Titan desperately holds off the Titans, but their objective still seems far.

Regardless of his injuries, Levi Ackerman speeds through the Titans, slicing through them all. Armin realizes that the Founder, Ymir, supports Eren’s genocide. Bertolt’s Colossal appears with Ymir’s will and bites the Armored Titan’s head off.

Reiner barely manages to escape and has enough energy for only one more transformation. As the other scout members barely hang on to their lives, Mikasa continues swinging. While hope seems dim, Falco’s flying Titan comes in from behind and picks them up.

The Marleyan Army sees a group of Eldian’s approach for medical help. However, they respond with guns pointed at their heads. Falco flies above Eren’s Spine and drops Reiner off as he transforms for the final time. The Armored Titan grabs the attention of the War Hammer Titans while Pieck moves forward.

With his distraction, Jean flies through the War Hammer Titans but gets stopped by the Jaw Titan. Pieck also helps him with multiple transformations as they progress closer to Eren’s nape. Mikasa spots an Okapi Titan holding Armin in its mouth and goes with Annie to rescue him.

The Rumbling carries on throughout the Earth as the population rapidly reduces from billions to millions to tens of thousands. Armin regains composure and thinks his situation through. With a moment of clarity, Armin awakens in the Paths.

Armin sees Zeke, who Ymir also ate, as he makes a sandcastle. Zeke talks about the philosophy of humanity thus far, which survived due to the human’s urge to multiply. Life kept changing form to reproduce and survive, desperately avoiding death and extinction.

Fueled by this urge, the Founder, Ymir, escaped into a world where death doesn’t exist. Armin asks about Ymir’s objective since she cannot betray Fritz. However, Zeke fails to understand her, which is the reason Ymir chose Eren instead.

Armin desperately tries to reason with Zeke, but he has come to terms with the objective of life. To live is to die, so there is no point in continuing a meaningless existence. Armin talks about his brief moments of happiness, running through the warm plains with Eren and Mikasa. Zeke is reminded of playing catch, a moment of joy in a meaningless life.

While the Female Titan gets pinned down by the other titans, Bertolt’s Colossal Titan regains control and swats away the Jaw Titans. Mikasa uses this opportunity to get Armin out, and they turn the battle in their favor. As Levi watches the action unfold, he sees Zeke call out to him.

As he enjoys the warm wind, Zeke’s head pops off with a clean slice of Levi Ackerman’s blade. The Rumbling comes to a standstill as all the titans pause. Jean swings through all the Titans with Pieck’s help as he reaches Eren’s nape and triggers the explosives.

The spine bone breaks, but the Beast within grows out and tries to reconnect. Armin stands on top of Eren with a solemn look and says farewell to his best friend. With a huge explosion triggered by his transformation, the clouds turn dark, and an eerie silence fills the atmosphere.

The Founder’s spinal worm crawls around even after the blast. Eren’s Attack Titan appears on two legs and starts walking towards it. Annie reunites with her father in the Eldian refugee camp. The worm emits a vapor everywhere, transforming the Eldians into titans.

Jean and Connie have accepted their fate as the entire refugee camp transforms into Titans. The Armored Titan jumps onto the worm, but the Titans swarm on top and pin him down. Mikasa is completely incapacitated with a surge of headaches as she envisions an everyday life with Eren.

Eren asks Mikasa to promise to forget him after he’s gone and live a happy, long life. Meanwhile, Armin’s Colossal Titan fights the Attack Titan, now equal in size. With the Ackermans on his side, they launch a  coordinated attack at Eren’s nape.

The Founder Ymir watches on as Mikasa slices off Eren’s head, giving it a final kiss as a farewell. In a vision of the Paths, Armin walks with Eren as he talks of Ymir’s objective. She remained subservient to Fritz after all the atrocities he did, only out of eternal love.

For two thousand years, she was trapped by love but was finally freed by Mikasa. Armin is shocked at this reveal, but even Eren doesn’t know why Mikasa is the answer. As the Founding Titan knows no past or future, Eren has lived everything simultaneously.

To save Bertholdt’s life during the initial attack at Shiganshina, Eren sent the Titan to kill his own mother. Armin asks about Mikasa’s future now that Eren’s gone. He says that now that her heartbreaker’s gone, she can move on and live happily with someone else.

Eren cries, sputtering out that he doesn’t want Mikasa ever to love anyone else. He wants her to pine over him for years after he’s gone and never to love anybody else. Besides that, he doesn’t want to die either since he still loves his friends.

Armin says there may be a way where he can still live on. The ground turns into a pool of blood with the genocide’s result made apparent. Eren had massacred eighty percent of humanity. After the Eldians of Paradis stop the genocide, they will be the heroes of the world.

The people outside the world will no longer have the forces to attack Paradis, and Eldians will know freedom. Armin cries into his chest at this horrible solution. He still has hope that humanity will come to understand one another with time. But now, Eren has forced a “kill or be killed’ philosophy into everyone.

Eren says he doesn’t know why, but he wants to level the world for the sake of his friends. Holding a seashell from the pool of blood, Armin says he understands the urge to erase humanity. He hands over the seashell to him, reminding Eren, who told him of the freedom outside the walls.

Armin takes his share of the blame for humanity’s massacre, and they hug for the last time. They promise to meet each other again in hell, and Eren erases his memories. After Eren’s death, Armin remembers everything once again as Mikasa holds his head close to her chest and walks up to him.

Secretary Muller points guns at all the Eldians, suspicious that they’re all titans still. In a perfect parallel to season 1, Armin walks through the crowd, arguing that they would’ve transformed if they could. He announces himself as Armin Arlert, an Eldian of Paradis that killed the Attack Titan, Eren Jaeger.

Mikasa sees the figure of Ymir fading away, released from the curse of love. The world revives with humanity coming together and nations reforming themselves. The Scout Regiment goes to Paradis Island as the Allied Forces’ Ambassadors to negotiate a peace treaty.

Armin assures them they won’t attack since they must know their story. The world wants to hear the story of Eren Jaeger and the Eldians who saved humanity. Mikasa sits by Eren’s grave, begging to see him again. A bird flies by, wrapping the scarf around her neck just like old times.

The world continues without the existence of Titans or the devils of Paradis. Even then, conflict continues, and war wages on between humanity. The Island is attacked once more, and people continue to rebuild. Generations down, Eren’s tree towers over the Island as the final remainder of the Island Devils.
