The Survey Corps. tried their hardest to stop the shiny worm from controlling all the Titans and starting the Rumbling once again in chapter 138 of Attack on Titan. Levi, Mikasa, Armin, and the others tried to stop the worm from reaching Eren.
The worm had summoned another horde of Titans and in a desperate attempt to once again stop their devastation, Levi and Mikasa rode Falco to reach Eren’s Titan form.
At first Mikasa was in denial and did not accept that Eren’s death could be the answer to stopping the whole devastation once and for all. But after witnessing the sacrifices her friends had made, she gained courage and finally landed the last blow on Eren.
With one final goodbye kiss she chopped off Eren’s head inside the Titan’s mouth. What will Ymir do now?

1. Chapter 139 Discussions and Predictions
In Chapter 138 titled “A Long Dream”, we see Mikasa putting an end to Eren’s devastation by chopping off his head.
Based on the current chapter, fans theorize this just might not be the end of Eren yet. Reiner also survived a severed head, so it is likely Eren’s Titan form might still be able to move even without the host.

5. Recap of Chapter 138
The explosion kills Eren’s skeletal Titan form but does not destroy the shining worm controlling it.
While the Survey Corps. are celebrating the hault of the Rumbling, Eren’s Titan form once again starts moving and soon the worm summons a horde of Titans.
Reiner, Armin, and the other past shifters try stopping the second wave of Titans from triggering the Rumbling again. As Levi and the crew plan their escape, the worm releases a smoke. The same smoke Zeke had released back in Ragako that could immobilize human and summon pure Titans.
Later, Levi tries to comfort Mikasa as she bawls at the sight of the world’s destruction. Levi informs that they are the only two left who can kill Eren.
As if in a dream like state, Mikasa sees a world completely different. She sees herself with Eren all alone in a hut by the mountains. Eren says that this is the path that Mikasa chose after the two ran away from the Marleyan war.
In her dream, Eren tells Mikasa to throw away the scarf after his death and tells her to be free and happy. The scene quickly shifts to Mikasa finally understanding her true purpose. She ties Eren’s scarf and tells everyone to help her reach Eren located inside the Titan’s mouth.
When she finally reaches him, with a last kiss she bids farewell to the boy she had known and loved her whole life and chops his head off. The sad farewell is witnessed by Ymir’s conscience who is watching them with an eerie smile on her face.
