Is Jon Kent getting the character arc he deserves? Is it justified?

In Superman & Lois Season 3, Jordan Kent has continued his journey as Superboy. He’s had tension with his father, Clark Kent, over how to be a responsible vigilante, but he’s finding his way. It also helps that Jordan’s grandfather Sam Lane is there to train him. Jordan’s development has left fans wondering if Jon will end up activating his powers, too.

The real question is: Are the writers doing justice to Jon Kent’s character?

It might seem that the show is wasting Jon’s character. But this isn’t the truth. The Superman & Lois writers are doing absolute justice to the character in their unique way.

Oddly enough, the show focused on Jon’s feud with Crystal’s father, Emmitt, rather than him building armor and using his tech expertise. Interestingly, Superman & Lois Season 3 has another surprising turn that pushes Jon further away from his Kryptonian heritage. But it works well for his character in the show, which can help add a distinct path to the Kent and House of El legacy.

In September 2023, roughly one month after Jordan Elsass’ departure was announced, actor Michael Bishop was confirmed as the new Jonathan Kent for Superman and Lois season 3.

Superman & Lois’ Jon Wants To Be a Grounded Hero

Many viewers assume that Superman & Lois are waiting to trigger Jon’s powers. With villains such as Bruno Mannheim and Lex Luthor lurking, it’s a distinct possibility. Given that he’s also stressed over Lois’ cancer, some think his emotional state may bring them to light someday as Jon pushes forth.

However, Superman & Lois veer in the opposite direction, / instead having Lana’s ex, Kyle, offer Jon a spot to train with his firefighter and EMT team in Episode 5, “Head On.”

Jon is happy about the opportunity, citing he has weekends free. Part of him was jealous that Jordan got to save lives in the past, so Jon (after his drug issue in Season 2) sees this as something that can give him purpose.

What makes it even more mature is he’ll have to give these weekends up, testing his long-distance relationship with Crystal, which he admits may not work out for their romance. Still, he can tell there’s a higher calling at play, with Crystal noting he can’t pass this chance to make a difference and be his ambitious best self.

Superman & Lois’ New Jon is a Breath of Fresh Air

This development for Jon Kent focuses more on the man and less on the super. It also paints Jon in the same light as his mother, Lois Kane, being a journalist, saving the world differently than the Man of Steel. It’s fitting as he’s Lois’ favorite, so it feels like a nice homage to her, giving Jon his little pocket in the show.

It further nods to the grounded arc writers and even Superman II, where Clark focused more on the human condition and what makes people tick, hurt and evolve.

It’s all about understanding people at the base level, which still allows Jon to use his tech genius for the firefighting and medical field. This helps connect him to the heroes in his family more, bringing his redemption full circle after he took X-Kryptonite to power up in the past.

It’s also worth noting this helps Kyle, too. Kyle is dating Chrissy now and is trying to grow after his infidelity led to the failure of his marriage. Thus, as a mentor, he gets more agency than just being a cheater. This is something that the show has slowly been doing, making him more of a father figure after Lana slaps Sarah.
