Good Omens Creator on Whether Crowley & Aziraphale Are Genderfluid

Good Omens is returning for season 2, so naturally, the conversations about Crowley and Aziraphale are on a steady rise once again.

Creator Neil Gaiman went on to answer fan questions on Twitter about some of the unresolved questions that have been on the audience’s mind since season 1 aired in 2019.

When one fan asked whether Crowley was genderfluid or if they were simply reading too much into it, Gaiman replied that the demon’s gender is “Fallen Angel.” When another person asked about Aziraphale’s gender, the author answered, “Angel (retired).”

Well… that’s one way to answer the question!

Although the book states that “Angels are sexless unless they specifically make an effort,” it isn’t distinctly stated in the show.

Gaiman had previously reflected on this line while talking to Digital Spy,

I like the idea that we know Crowley and Aziraphale don’t really… these are two ethereal and occult beings who aren’t really quite clear on what mammals are about, even. I don’t really think that they’ve sussed complicated human things like gender.

Besides Crowley and Aziraphale, the series has other non-binary and genderfluid angels. Gaiman has in various instances shown his support to the LGBTQ+ community, adding more inclusive characters to his stories.

Series’ stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant announced the start of filming for season 2 back in October.

However, Deadline recently broke the news that Benedict Cumberbatch and Frances McDormand won’t be returning this season. Gaiman said in a statement,

We are so thrilled that we were able to get so many fabulous actors to return to the Good Omens family. Some of them are reprising roles, some of them are playing completely new characters. And we are just as thrilled by the people coming to the Good Omens team for the first time. We have an ensemble cast of astonishing talent, and seeing what they’re giving us is a daily treat. I can’t wait until the rest of the world gets that treat, too.

Good Omens season 1 is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
