Anthony Mackie Breaks Silence on Jonathan Majors’ Arrest and MCU Future

Anthony Mackie, who plays Captain America in the MCU, shares his thoughts on Jonathan Majors’ accusations and arrest and how it might affect his involvement in Phase 5 and beyond.

MCU actor Jonathan Majors faces an uncertain future in the franchise after his arrest in March. The actor made his MCU debut as He Who Remains in Loki and reprised his role as a different Kang variant in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Majors was charged with strangulation, assault and harassment.

Inverse recently interviewed Mackie, who will return as Sam Wilson in the 2024 MCU film Captain America: Brave New World.

The interviewer asked him about Majors’ situation, which sparked rumors among fans that Marvel might recast Kang in the MCU after his arrest.

However, Marvel Studios has not made any official statement on the matter until now. Mackie avoided giving any definitive answer or speculation on Majors’ future in the MCU, stating:

We’re a country that was built on ‘everyone is innocent until proven guilty.’ That’s one of the staples of this country. Nothing has been proven about this dude. Nothing. So everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That’s all I can say. It’s crazy where we are as a society. But as a country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Majors was arrested in New York City on March 25 after police received a 911 call. According to the NYPD, a 30-year-old woman claimed Majors had assaulted her and caused minor injuries to her head and neck.

The actor’s lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, has refuted the allegations. Majors is charged with misdemeanor, assault and aggravated harassment, and his trial is scheduled for Aug. 3.

The arrest had negative repercussions for Majors’ career, as the U.S. Army removed recruitment ads featuring him, and the Texas Rangers cut him from their ads as well. He also lost his management company and his PR firm.

Moreover, Majors was dropped from two projects, a movie with Willem Dafoe called The Man in My Basement, and an Otis Redding biopic that he was attached to. Regarding the MCU, Marvel Studios had not discussed recasting Majors as Kang as of Apr. 18, according to a report.

The outcome of Majors’ trial will have a significant impact on his career, both in the MCU and in Hollywood in general. Marvel is reportedly minimizing Majors’ role in Loki season 2, but the show was already filmed before his arrest, so it’s unlikely to be altered.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, on the other hand, was postponed to 2026, giving Marvel Studios time to make changes, either with the cast or the plot. At this point, Majors’ MCU future is uncertain, and other Marvel actors may choose to avoid commenting on the situation or give a vague answer like Mackie’s.
