Andy Serkis Hints Alfred won’t Always See Eye to Eye with The Batman

When talking about Batman’s side-kick, it’s hard to stop yourself humming the tune of 1960s Batman theme whilst picturing an animated Robin next to him.

However, we don’t praise the Caped Crusader’s main side-kick, Alfred Pennyworth, nearly as much. Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler/guardian/best friend has often been overlooked in the DCEU.

As the person who raised Bruce since the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Alfred is protective of him. And so when the Bat is out to catch bad guys every night, Alfred is the one person who is genuinely worried for his wellbeing.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman might just be the perfect film to give Alfred the recognition he deserves, showing that he’s more than just the butler who supports Bruce’s every decision.

Actor Andy Serkis recently talked to Total Film about how his character trying hard to keep Bruce from going insane would strain their relationship in the upcoming film.

[Alfred] can see that [Bruce is] heading towards trouble. He’s watching, and he’s still trying to hold onto [Bruce] to try to stop him from disappearing down a rabbit hole at this point. I think he believes that he’s dangerous to himself, and it isn’t particularly well-formed as an idea.

The most recent full-length trailer reflected some of this conflict between the duo. As Batman is looking for answers to the Riddler’s ridiculous riddles, he has to face his past to uncover how he fits into it all.

In one of the shots, Bruce tells Alfred, “All these years, you lied to me, Alfred,” to which he replied, “We all have our scars, Bruce.”

This clip alone gives us a more complex portrayal of Alfred as he has his secrets that he might’ve kept from Bruce for the protagonist’s own good.

In an interview with GQ, Robert Pattinson mentioned how Bruce’s way of coping with trauma isn’t exactly healthy, as his pain has “culminated in this Batman persona” almost like a drug addiction.

This, in turn, shows how Bruce and Alfred hold different perspectives when it comes to him putting on his cowl each night,

There’s a moment when Alfred asks Bruce what his family would think of him tarnishing the family legacy with his new side hustle. And Bruce says: ‘This is my family legacy. If I don’t do this, then there’s nothing else for me.’ I always read that as not like, ‘There’s nothing else,’ like, ‘I don’t have a purpose.’ But like: ‘I’m checking out.’

The Batman (né the next best comic book film) finally arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022.
