Former Marvel Lawyer’s Take on Andrew Garfield’s Return in TASM3

Andrew Garfield has a greenlight in legal standing to return as Peter Parker, a.k.a Spider-Man, in a potential The Amazing Spider-Man 3. 

Andrew Garfield had first slipped into the webbed superhero suit back in 2012 for the first film by Sony after Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, followed by a sequel in 2014. But after making a dissatisfying impression on critics and audiences, the third film was canceled by the production studio.

But The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was not the last we saw of Garfield’s Peter Parker. In Sony and Marvel’s 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield returned beside Tobey Maguire, both Spidermen joining Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to create a live-action spider-verse if you may.

Ever since No Way Home’s grand success, Andrew’s Spider-Man has gotten the recognition he failed to get in the 2010s. The MCU film sparked a curious mindset, resulting in an uprising demand from viewers—make The Amazing Spider-Man 3 happen!

Fans have been clamoring for the third film featuring Andrew’s Spider-Man after seeing him bring back to life his depiction of Peter Parker in the recent Spiderman film. 

Whether any serious consideration has been given to the fan’s demands is not yet confirmed, but we know the power of the Marvel fandom.

Andrew has shown his willingness to play Spider-Man again many times, but after No Way Home’s closure on the character Andrew, he explained how he had wrapped up his story of Peter Parker with the MCU film and thus has no plans now to return.

The actor fears that he has grown too old to play the teen to a tee and has jokingly said that even if he were to tell the truth about no future projects as Spider-Man, no one would believe him.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Tom Bacon, former Marvel lawyer Paul Sarker disclosed that if Andrew wanted to return as the superhero, no contract could stop him from doing so. 

Sarker has highlighted that his opinion is strictly from a legal standpoint, and any creative decisions will be left to the studios.

I know Sony has the exclusive rights to Spider-Man. In theory, if Andrew Garfield wanted to be part of this franchise moving forward, in Amazing Spider-Man 3, and there was a budget for it, legally, the sides could work out whatever paperwork needed to be done to make that happen.

But continuing about Andrew’s willingness to play, Sarker commented with the following statement:

I think Andrew Garfield may not want to do it. I think he’s gone on record saying he’s going to take a break from acting and may not be in the area creatively where he wants to be making Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Andrew has confirmed that he will be taking a break from acting after his recent true-crime show aired on Hulu but has not added anything about the timeline of his return. Adding Garfield’s break into the mix of Sony’s reluctance to bring back a project that had failed them once, the chances of seeing a TASM3 are quite low.

About The Amazing Spider-Man 3

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is the third film in the Amazing Spider-Man film series. This project has not yet been confirmed by Sony or Marvel studios, but fans of the film series have demanded its return.

No plot for the film has been set, but chances point to the film continuing Peter Parker’s double life as webbed superhero Spider-Man and how he copes after the death of the love of his life, Gwen Stacy.

The film will star Andrew Garfield in the lead and Sally Field (Aunt May) might make a return as well. Previous cast members Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Rhys Ifans’ return is not confirmed either.
