AMD Radeon 7000 with RDNA 3 GPU Will Feature Higher Power Consumption

AMD’s Senior VP, Sam Naffziger, has revealed the next-generation RDNA 3 GPUs that’d fuel the Radeon RX 7000 series graphic cards. They will be more power-hungry than available solutions while offering 50% perf/watt gains.

In order for their GPUs to deliver an improved and higher performance, both AMD and Nvidia are expected to give emphasis to graphic card power design and efficiency.

While AMD is confident in its ability to provide >50% better power efficiency over RDNA2, team Red will have to increase the power consumption of their designs, given that the opposition is doing so as well.

The demand for gaming and compute performance is, if anything, just accelerating, and at the same time, the underlying process technology is slowing down pretty dramatically — and the improvement rate. So the power levels are just going to keep going up.

With Nvidia reportedly increasing power targets for its upcoming Ada Lovelace (RTX 40) series, AMD is following the same trail, although at a smaller level, with its RDNA 3.

If we go back in time, the word on the street stated that the AMD RDNA 3-powered Radeon RX 7000 series was offering TDPs of up to 400W. In contrast to the existing Navi 21 GPU that provides up to 335W (Navi 21 KXTX), this leads to a 100W increase.

Therefore, if AMD aims to achieve a twofold gain in terms of performance over its current lineup, the TDP is likely to touch 450W.

As for how power-hungry the opposition will turn out, only time will tell, but Naffziger remains poised that the competition will “have to push them [power levels] a lot higher than we will.”

For now, it also remains to be seen if AMD is planning on using the new PCIe Gen5 16-pin power connector for cards going beyond 400-450W TBP, given that triple 8-pin connectors only go as far as 450W. With AMD Radeon RX 7000 series expected to roll out later this year, we’ll soon find out which route team Red will head down: the triple 8-pin or the new PCIe Gen 5 connector one?
