AMD reveals their fastest mobile GPU based on the Navi 31 processor

Every passing day, with every passing innovation, AMD is inching closer, if not surpassing its arch-rivals Nvidia in the GPU sector. It has become a recent trend wherein Nvidia releases a GPU and AMD releases a GPU that provides better performance at a cheaper price.

AMD has released a mobile GPU based on the top-of-the-line Navi 31 processor in a mobile configuration, named the Radeon RX 7900M. This mobile GPU will provide up to 7% higher performance than the competitive offering in QHD – 1440p – resolution.

This is a direct comparison with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop variant. Achieving 7% higher performance on average is quite a commendable feat.

The Radeon 7900M will feature an RDNA3-based Compute Units – 72 in count. There will be second-generation AI and ray-tracing accelerators.

The 7900M will pack quite a punch with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This will allow the GPU to render high-quality textures, complex 3D environments, and animations in real time.

The base clock speed is 1825 MHz and the boost clock frequency is up to 2090 MHz. However, the boost clock speed is subject to the condition that the laptop in which the 7900M is used gets at least 180W of power.

So, the boost clock frequency is at the laptop manufacturer’s prerogative. The Infinity Cache will have a massive 64MB capacity, meaning faster access times and less tearing of frames after rendering, given the extensive 256-bit memory interface.

The most exciting feature about the 7900M is that the Graphic Circuitry, aka the GCD, is surrounded by tiny chiplets that house the L3 cache and memory interfaces. This allows high-speed access times and provides the edge over the competition, i.e., the RTX 4080 12GB laptop variant.

The bigger 16GB VRAM also helps the 7900M edge over the RTX 4080 by 7% in QHD definition. On a title like Cyberpunk 2077, which is VRAM intensive, the 7900M performs 38% better.

This is plenty of reason for fans to switch over to Team Red. With the competitive pricing and the quality of products that AMD is making, Nvidia should shift its focus on the consumer GPU section to create profitable and user-friendly products instead of just focusing on the AI-chip race.
