AMD clarifies the difference between the Ryzen 7040HS and the 7040H

The Ryzen 7040 series is the latest series of processors from AMD based on the Zen 4 architecture and dubbed the “Phoenix.” There are quite a few variants in the market and a few that are yet to be released, leaving some room for misunderstanding.

This is precisely what happened with the Ryzen 7040HS and the 7040H series. The problem is that despite different nomenclature, the specifications of the two processors are precisely the same, with the same CPU and GPU clocks and TDP.

AMD has now clarified on the website that the Ryzen 7040H series will be exclusive to Mainland People’s Republic of China. At the same time, the Ryzen 7040HS will be available in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Japan and Latin American Countries.

Thus the only difference between the Ryzen 7040 HS and the 7040H is the region in which they will be available. This means both the series will have the exact 8-core count and 16-thread count with a base clock of 4.00 GHz and max boost clock of up to 5.2 GHz.

Both of them will operate at the same TDP, which is configurable from 35W to 45W. The cores are based on TSMC’s 4nm FinFET technology.

Only a few 7040HS Phoenix SKUs have been spotted in the laptops released for the broader market. However, AMD did mention that they had shipped some Ryzen 7040 CPUs to OEMs in Q1 of 2023.

Some China-exclusive retailers have listed several Ryzen 9 7940H variants. This includes three new laptops by ASUS, Lenovo and Machenike. Some laptops do not have discrete graphics and will have a TDP higher than 65W.

However, there’s little to no trace of the 7940HS model. The Ryzen 7040 Phoenix series is highly anticipated because of its efficient performance.

One of the most attractive things about this APU is the use of RDNA3-based integrated graphics, which provide performance at par with some entry-level discrete GPU solutions.

The Phoenix-powered laptops are expected to hit the shelves soon. The release date depends on when AMD’s partners see it fit to release new products into the market that will be priced competitively.
